The evolution of lifeboats has greatly improved since the tragic incident of the Titanic's collision with an iceberg four days into her maiden journey, sailing from Southampton in England to New York in the United States of America on April 14, 1912. One of the findings was that there were insufficient lifeboats to accommodate the 2220 passengers, as well as the design of the lifeboat. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) responded by convening the 1914 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Useful video for understanding of small craft design and sailing, perfect experiment elucidating the ship structure focusing particularly on bottom impact, and identifying where maximum pressure occurs, operational limit curve of high-speed crafts (higher waves, lower speeds), master skills (perpendicular heading into waves to avoid excessive heel, utilizing the advantages of the vessel’s longitudinal stability). Happy World Maritime Day! (for yesterday if you’re ahead of the dateline, and today if you follow us Easterner’s into the sunrise) It being the 50th Anniversary of this iteration of SOLAS and pretty much 100 years since that convention began, it’s fitting that this year’s theme focuses on Navigating the Future: Safety First. All too often I think we find ourselves fixated on, “what went wrong?”, “why is this being done badly?”, and (sadly), “who can we blame?”, while we throw together another ad hoc checklist to make sure it isn’t me next time… And while yes, I’ve said it, and hundreds of thousands before me (and I’m sure after me) will continue to say, “it just ain’t good enough!”, I also think there’s something to be said for celebrating the things we do get right, and for looking at those who do lead the fleets, in order to help us navigate our way towards success, as opposed to towing ourselves out of trouble. So, while it was born out of a disaster of hubris, let’s remember what SOLAS is about, and the lives it’s helped to save over the years, cause I’d hate to think where we’d be without it, and the International Maritime Organization who drive it forward. #WorldMaritimeDay #NavigatingTheFuture #SafetyFirst #SOLAS #InternationalMaritimeOrganisation #IMO Australasian Marine Pilots Institute (AMPI) International Maritime Pilots' Association (IMPA)
