I read two articles in the middle of the night, both about different parts of the world, but both resonating with the same themes, of exploitation, wilful disregard of nature and ecology, and also of First Nation rights and lives. Here's the first, an account of what is happening in the Yucatan peninsula with the Tren Maya project; a rail project that is cutting swathes through a precious eco system of one of the world's most valuable aquifers. It's a huge project; a kind of Mexican HS2 (but in a different league) which does not have the blessing of the Mayan tribes, but despite that it's gone ahead anyway. The jungle at ground level is being hacked and destroyed to make way for the railway, and in one section they are having to raise the railway onto a bridge to preserve what's underneath. But to do that they are driving huge concrete pillars deep into the ground. These pillars are driving through the cenotes, the underwater cave system found in this area, and according to one expert, the chemicals from the concrete are already starting to leach into the waters. (That's aside from the point that this area is inherently unstable due to all the caves and porous limestone). I'm in touch with some of the people opposing this project, (including Guillermo D Christy) and they sound in utter despair. One thing they mentioned recently is that there are no wildlife bridges being built across the Tren Maya, only traps. And the animals who manage to avoid the traps are being forced to find food in the towns and villages, and are killed when they do. The fragile balance of this huge aquifer is being fundamentally altered, as it loses so many elements and connections and as bits of it are poisoned (which will filter into the other areas). And when the courts order the people who are building the Tren Maya to stop (as they have done several times) no one takes any notice. They just keep building. Please help get the word out about what's happening in Mexico. It's symptomatic of the same problem the world over, reckless development of precious ecosystems instead of preserving these places and ensuring there is climate justice for the people who live there. But that can only be organised on a global level, and until we start recognising this same pattern, and coming together to stop it, this kind of exploitation will just go on, destroying our natural world. #Trenmaya #wildlifebridge #Mexico #water https://lnkd.in/ewF3QHEQ

🐦🐞🪶 As the #AAM industry develops and shares low-level airspace with protected wildlife species we need to define what intentional disturbance means related to our emerging technologies and take measures and mitigation to share our skies responsibly. What other things do you think we should be considering if we want to fly aircraft more regularly in low-level airspace? Read about the species that are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as amended by the Environmental Protection Act 1990. It is an offense to intentionally disturb any of these species during the breeding season without a valid license. https://lnkd.in/dVvKFkCT

This is quite a story: could we systematically go to court when political decisions harming our biosphere are not backed-up by science? I can imagine quite a number of poor decisions that should be submitted immediately to the EU court of justice. #science #justice #conservation #europeanunion

BEAUTIFUL BREAKING NEWS! EU Court of Justices rules against Wolf Culling! The EU Court of Justice has delivered a landmark ruling, affirming that economic reasons alone can't justify downgrading wolf protections. This decision effectively cancels Ursula von der Leyen's scientifically unsubstantiated proposal to lower the protection status of wolves in the EU. The court emphasized that any derogations must be based on clear, precise objectives and supported by scientific evidence. Conservation comes first, ensuring that the long-term survival and favorable conservation status of this iconic species are prioritized. The recent case before the European Court of Justice (ECJ) involved the Austrian region of Tyrol's decision to allow wolf hunting in 2022 due to increasing attacks on livestock. Environmental groups challenged this decision, arguing it violated the EU's Habitats Directive, which protects wolves as a strictly protected species. The case was referred to the ECJ by the Tyrolean Provincial Administrative Court for interpretation of EU law. The ECJ ruled that economic reasons alone, such as preventing livestock losses, are insufficient to justify exceptions to the ban on wolf hunting. ECJ has taken similar decisons against: Sweden: In 2010, the ECJ opened an infringement case (2010/4200) which led to the temporary halting of licensed wolf hunts. A second infringement case (2014/2178) was opened due to amendments in Swedish law that restricted environmental organizations' access to justice in court concerning hunting regulations. Finland: In 2019 (C-674/17 Tapiola), the ECJ ruled that environmental directives need to be respected. The new decision not only reinforces the protection of wolves but also upholds the integrity of EU conservation laws, setting a precedent for the protection of other endangered species. More than 3.000.000 birds died from glass collisions yesterday in the US alone. This will happen again today, and for the ongoing future unless action is taken now. If #architecture kills birds it is not sustainable nor green. Without #birds, #sustainability would be pointless. #hotel and #resort properties are particularly important for public awareness. Solutions are as simple as exterior window screens, applied films (including advertising or holiday themed products), and bird-friendly glazing. What are people waiting for? 3.000.000 birds will die today, without exaggeration, unless the issue is addressed. Participants in ZLI’s Little Birds Initiative gain tax deductions that fund remediation completely, from the smallest #tinyhome to the largest of #resorts and #corporate campuses. Everyone wins in the Initiative. Find out more at www.zoolighting.org , or reach out to me here.

In each meeting, the NTCA was asked to address the grievances of tribal communities, regarding village relocation, by the MOTA, the MOEFCC and its own officials. In addition, the MOTA made it clear that relevant Forest Rights Act (FRA) provisions have to be kept in mind while notifying both, tiger reserves and village relocation programmes – in effect, FRA claims have to be cleared before any relocation, as the claims would then enable the communities to claim compensation and rehabilitation packages. Despite these internal discussions, on June 19, the NTCA inexplicably sent an order to wildlife wardens of all the tiger states in the country. The order asked to expedite the relocation of 591 villages, comprising 64,801 families, from all tiger reserves. In the next meeting, on February 29, 2024, Mandwe emphasised the need to use traditional knowledge for conservation instead of a tiger or cheetah-centric approach. Here the traditional knowledge-centric approach referred to the well-documented environment-beneficial practices undertaken by forest-dwelling communities that help in the conservation of forests and wildlife. In both these meetings, the NTCA assured the MOTA and the MOEFCC that compliance with FRA was being ensured at the field level, and forest villages were being treated on par with revenue villages. Once a tiger-populated area is designated as a tiger reserve, the local human population often faces the threat of displacement. Although the law permits relocation of villages only on a “voluntary” basis with “mutually agreed terms and conditions,” there have been numerous instances in the past where this principle was not adhered to. The major contention regarding the order is that it quoted Section 38V (4) of the amended WLP, which stipulates that the core and critical tiger habitats are required to be kept as inviolate for tiger conservation. But the order conveniently omitted one part of the section – “without affecting the rights of the Scheduled Tribes or such other forest dwellers.” There are examples in the country where traditionally dwelling tribes have coexisted with tigers in the tiger reserves and have aided in conservation. Therefore, any relocation prior to establishing that coexistence is not possible and settling the FRA claims would be “criminal.” https://lnkd.in/g2SQAiB3

The Biden administration is finalizing the Arctic Refuge FSEIS, which would offer the strongest possible protections for the Refuge allowed under the 2017 Tax Act. But let’s be clear—this law remains in the books, and the responsibility rests on Congress to fix it. Congress, it’s time to act and repeal the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge provision from the Tax Act. The future of America’s Arctic depends on it. #ProtectTheArctic #RepealTheArcticLeaseMandate #TaxActMustG

If the Lower Thames Crossing is approved, it would show once again that the needs of nature are not being prioritised. With the continuous approval of large infrastructure projects which result in the loss of irreplaceable habitats, it’s no surprise that the UK Government are falling behind their 30 by 30 targets. We have just six-years left to protect 30% of our land and seas, but with only 3% of England’s land and 8% of its seas currently protected, can we really reach these targets?
Kent Wildlife Trust’s Planning and Policy Officer Emma Waller speaks to KMFM about the environmental impacts of the Lower Thames Crossing. Surely it is time for the government to invest in an integrated green travel strategy instead of destroying ancient woodland?👇👇

A voice for the birds: We have only estimated numbers of impacts of birds on certain areas where windturbines are placed in Norway - but no national overview. Yesterday another adult White Tailed eagle was euthanized after a bad impaced with a windturbine. There are great dark numbers of losses, as Norway holds 50% of the world population of WT eagles, it is important to create projects to start to take action to maintain various bird populations affected by windturbines - before their numbers go critical. For years there have been no plan and little mandatory registrations regarding welfare of raptors and birds impacting with windturbines. Is it not time to change this? https://lnkd.in/da_WPG54 #awareness #windturbines #norway #raptors #natureconservation #animalwelfare #birdlife
