Have You Heard of Dragon Ties in Historic Buildings? When we think about historic buildings, we often admire their charm and beauty, but behind the scenes, there’s some incredible engineering that keeps them standing. One fascinating feature found in older timber-framed buildings is the dragon tie. So, what is a dragon tie? It’s a diagonal timber beam used in the corners of buildings, particularly in medieval and Tudor timber-framed houses. Its purpose is to support the structure where walls meet at right angles, helping to distribute the roof load and strengthen the frame. Think of it as an early (and elegant) form of reinforcement! Dragon ties allowed builders to achieve larger overhangs – those striking jettied upper floors that give historic buildings their iconic look. As we work to preserve these structures today, it’s a reminder of how traditional building techniques still inspire modern solutions. Does anyone know why they are referred to a dragon ties? Heritage Potential successfully secured Full Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent for the replacement of 10 single-glazed front windows with slimline double-glazed replicas at Grade II* listed Grosvenor Crescent. 1-10 Grosvenor Crescent is a Grade II* row of terraced houses, constructed in the mid-19th century by London property developer Seth Smith. The crescent retains a uniform classical appearance with exquisite fine detailing and architectural and historic merit of more than special interest. Through detailed analysis, it was demonstrated that the existing windows were non-original copies, in poor condition, and were of no special interest. Therefore, it was argued that replacing them with more sustainable, like-for-like designs, would have a neutral impact on the significance of the listed building and the conservation area. Another week, another webinar… this one is hosted by AIA Illinois and it’s one of my favorite topics to present: Materiality of Masonry. Please join us next Monday if you’re able. The enduring popularity of masonry in all its forms is largely attributed to the intrinsic properties offered by the materials of brick, block, stone, terra cotta, tile, and terrazzo. But in this era of rapid innovations in construction materials and techniques, does masonry continue to provide value, and how have these materials and assemblies evolved? This seminar takes a close look at the historic architectural significance held by traditional masonry materials, but it also challenges participants to use these materials in innovative ways, showing examples of contemporary design to balance their classic applications. The program then builds on the materials themselves, showing common wall and floor assembly details and emphasizing the importance of designing for performance and contructibility. Finally, it addresses the topic of sustainability and how masonry and tile’s composition of natural and healthy ingredients and their inherent durability translate to buildings that are healthy, long-lasting, and able to be repurposed generations after their initial construction. “Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together… there it begins.” A building material may not be the only thing that defines architecture, but it’s certainly high on the list. Today’s masonry takes many forms, some as old as the earth itself, and others a more modern amalgamation. One thing all masonry has in common is that it suits our need for a durable and sustainable building material. This is why we keep using it generation after generation. Stone, brick, and tile have shaped cities and civilizations throughout history, yet we continue to innovate and improve on them. Construction delivery has reached new levels of efficiency.
