Little heard Engineering Marvels.🙏 This is the "Z" reversal in the Darjeeling Hill Railway at a place called Rangtong. Many of you would have enjoyed this ride on this train. But I don't know how many of you have noticed this difficult turn. *The inspiration. The idea for the 'Z' reverses or Zig-Zags, like this one at Gayabari, (Darjeeling, India), year 1880, came from Lily Ramsey – wife of the chief DHR contractor Herbert Ramsey – who remembered the backwards and forwards steps of ballroom dancing. *Their Conversation:* _Engineer's wife: Darling, why are you so worried with this piece of paper?_ _Engineer: I am not able to find a solution for this Engineering problem._ _Wife: What problem? tell me._ _Engineer: After constructing upto this stretch, not able to proceed forward._ _Wife: So what?_ _Engineer: No place to go forward, very steep terrain._ _Wife: If you are not able to proceed forward, don't worry. Go backward._ _Engineer: what?_ _Wife: Yes,, Go reverse!_ Engineer got the solution and finalised the design. He had mentioned this in his diary.

Why are so many public engineering projects plagued with poor judgement? Politicians as well as the engineers involved want to chase the latest cutting-edge technology, they want to chase the rainbow, often with costly and poor outcomes. Seattle reflects this with their light rail problems from sinking rails (just poor engineering) to trains out of service because of single sourced parts. People, this is a demonstration of stupidity or God-arrogance at play. The best practice for engineering a public use project is to use proven technology. Single sourced parts and unproven tech is a poor choice when applied to public needs. This should be common sense but, obviously it is not. As professionals in the craft, we should be outspoken about this and critical of any peer who cannot apply common best practices.
