I'm looking forward to this discussion with Dcode tomorrow. Since I retired from the Air Force last year, I've listened and learned so much about this hot topic. I hope to share that learning in the context of what I saw during a 30+ year career. Some things I hope to discuss: - What kinds of innovation is DoD looking for? This is super cool. If you’ve had to interact with customer service, you’ll know the pain of just *finding* a number to call. Regardless of what it seems to be, most enterprises do want to offer fast, available customer service. Well then why don’t they? Because costs spiral - when you have millions of customers needing support, you really can’t make a human available 24x7 without damaging the rest of business. Frontline AI support effectively solves this scalability problem, at least for the easier customer issues. It’s no replacement for human empathy though - for a young family stuck at an airport with flight cancellations, hearing that everything is fine and they will be taken care of is just as important as the tactical resolution of the issue. So, my mental model for what AI can do for customer service - automate frontline support, so humans can do that they do best - solve complexity, be empathetic, and, well, be human.

Meet the Luba 2 lawnmower, an example of Deeptech, the type of high end physical technology I invest in through Francesco Perticarari‘s fund Silicon Roundabout Ventures. Deeptech solves complex challenges in the physical world (sometimes using AI), which is an exciting new space and I personally find it more interesting than software alone. Mon/Tue were away visiting prospect in the North of the UK and 7 responses to last weeks letters which is a bit disappointing but good new opportunities nonetheless.
