It's hard to believe it is 7 years on from the most tragic and shocking failure of a building in modern times.
Grenfell has triggered a much needed shake up of legislation and changes to practice. This is throughout from product testing, design through to build management and quality.
As an industry we don't need to just change our legislation but our attitude to building safety.
Everyone should be safe in their home.
as a newly qualified Architect, I always use Grenfell as a point of reflection. when I meet a client or contractor who argues why they have to follow our specifications because it 'costs more' I always remind them of the 72 people who lost their lives, and the families and neighbourhood which have been effected.
The new changes in legislation have ensured attention is given to the safety of a building throughout it's use and start.
I, as well as many of my peers are still finding our way through the new regulations. They are generally complex and in places not clear.
It is imperative that as an industry we come together to ensure the new regulations are clear and unambiguous to avoid the repeat of such a tragedy.
Today marks 7 years since the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower. We remember the people who lost their lives, the survivors, and the bereaved.
While building safety has improved, more must be done to prevent future tragedies. We are committed to working with the next Government and the sector to create a safer future for all.
