Current water challenges and South Africa's ranking as the 30th driest country in the world underscore the urgency of water conservation efforts this World Water Day. According to the 'Water 2023: South Africa’s Looming Crisis' report, our nation faces a forecasted water deficit of 1.60 to 2.70 billion cubic metres by 2030. This will have significant implications for investment, job creation, and economic growth. As such, it is imperative that we prioritise the maintenance and repair of our water assets to prevent further loss of this precious resource. Every decision and action regarding water reuse stems from this foundational principle. At Tsebo, we are dedicated to water efficiency through eco-friendly cleaning innovations, employee recycling initiatives, and the implementation of smart meters to monitor and reduce our usage. With the proposed regulatory reforms in the water sector, there is opportunity for innovative public-private sector collaboration in relation to sustainable water infrastructure development.

In Nigeria, borehole serve as a primary water source, offering accessibility, reliability, independence, and better water quality. However, its facing challenges like maintenance, pollution risks, high costs, and aquifer depletion. To address these, sustainable management, community engagement, capacity building, diversification of water sources, and regulatory frameworks are recommended for long-term viability and community well-being. During Water Saving Week (May 27-31, 2024), let's be reminded that everyone can help conserve water by: -Fixing leaks promptly -Using water-efficient appliances -Shortening shower time -Collecting rainwater -Landscaping wisely -Turning off the tap when not needed -Reusing water -Educating others about water conservation. These simple actions can make a significant impact and promote a sustainable future. The week-long campaign seeks to raise awareness about the need of reducing water waste to manage climate change, maintain our environment healthy, and assist local communities in thriving.

It is imperative that we reflect not only on the significance of water itself but also on its profound interconnection with various sectors such as energy and human sustainability. - Water and energy are intrinsically linked, forming the backbone of human civilization and development. Access to clean and reliable water sources is essential for meeting our basic needs, supporting agriculture, industry, and sanitation, and sustaining ecosystems. - Despite its abundance, water scarcity remains a pressing concern in certain regions of Zambia, exacerbated by population growth, urbanization, and climate change. Sustainable water management practices, including watershed protection, water conservation, and integrated water resource management, are essential for ensuring the long-term sustainability of Zambia's water supplies. - Recognizing the intrinsic linkages between water, climate, and peace and adopting integrated approaches to water management that prioritize conservation, efficiency, and equity is key to long-term water sustainability. - Investing in water infrastructure, such as rainwater harvesting systems, water storage facilities, and wastewater treatment plants, can enhance water security, promote resilience, and reduce vulnerability to climate change. As we commemorate World Water Day under the theme "Water for Peace," let us continue to protecting and preserving Zambia's precious water resources. On Tuesday the 2nd of July, the European Economic and Social Committee held a meeting regarding the need to build a comprehensive water strategy in the context of the climate biodiversity emergencies: https://buff.ly/4d6LSOC 🚨 Florian Marin highlighted Romania's water scarcity crisis, despite being one of the EU's richest countries in water resources. Alarmingly, over 20 municipalities in Romania have restricted water access due to scarcity: https://buff.ly/3zE2lLt 🚿About 1/3 of the Romanian population lacks basic amenities like a bath, shower, or indoor flushing toilet.
