We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of author Amalia Hoffman, z"l (zikhronah livrakha, may her memory be a blessing), pictured here (center, front) at a PJ Library event in New York last year. Many of our PJ Library colleagues worked closely with Amalia to produce several beautiful board books, including First Fruits, published by PJ Publishing last month. We are proud to have shared Amalia’s work with tens of thousands of Jewish children around the world. She will be remembered for her kindness, her infinite creativity, and her charming sense of humor. Our hearts go out to Amalia's family and friends.

"A Little Slice of the Moon" - winner of the 2023 New Letters Conger Beasley Jr. Award in Nonfiction - is about my experience working at a small town truck stop McDonald's, which became a sanctuary from a home life scarred by multiple intersecting wounds: religious shunning, serious illness, and the daily havoc caused by unaddressed trauma. I hope this essay reaches, connects to, and in some small way heals, someone else trying to carry and reckon with - a big, unruly story. The full essay is now available to read here: https://lnkd.in/emeAbZVu

Opinion: Authoritarianism and hatred are no match for a politics of love by @ruthbenghiat.She is mirroring what I have been saying for 48 years- Love is stronger than mind control and that people who care about family and friends who have been swept up into can and should warmly reconnect with them. Chapter 9 in my book, The Cult of Trump, which has been re-released by Simon and Schuster, is about how to help people to reality-test and come back to normality. https://lnkd.in/dHKdACpe

My first book, Risible: Laughter Without Reason and the Reproduction of Sound came out this week with University of California Press! The book is a kind of alternative history of laughter as a sound, as a body technique, as a product of a voice that is both human and not. It takes all kinds and twists and turns from Aristotelian philosophy to the racial history of phonography, to feminist visions of reproduction, to Hollywood laughtracks, and the history of the concept of the human. Risible is Open Access and downloadable for free at the link below (also if you google my name and the word Risible you will find it with ease).
