From the 5X Festival newsletter today: "Why Karan bagging a fan choice JUNO isn’t a win The 2024 JUNOS saw Canadian-Panjabi artist Karan Aujla win the TikTok JUNO Fan Choice award, and though we're super excited about South Asian representation at the event, it's not the kind of representation we should get too comfortable with. We couldn't help but notice that there was no brown person nominated for any other award - no single of the year, record of the year, or artist of the year. And yet, South Asian music continues to outperform all genres and all other Canadian artists on a world stage. Aujla alone has 11.4 million monthly Spotify listeners and over 2.2 billion Spotify streams. It's no surprise that the rise of South Asian music is taking over. Karan and Ikky's Making Memories album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart, making it the highest-charting Panjabi album debut in Canadian history. What's also unclear is that, if South Asian artists were to be nominated for more Junos, what would the categories be? Would they be nominated in "Global Music", versus a dedicated category allotment? We commend the JUNOs on their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion commitment, but we know that there is still a ton of work to be done. Here's what we're calling for: 1. More recognition of the Canadian superpower that is South Asian music. 2. Expansion on categories to include genres and artists who don't fit the current categories. 3. More education on how to become an CARAS Academy Delegate, submit work for award consideration and become a judge. We're also calling on our artist community to get involved. If we want a seat at the table, we have to show up. 1. Sign up as a member of CARAS to participate in the nominating and voting process. CARAS is the chief organization of the Canadian music industry. 2. Submit your work! If we don't submit, we can't be nominated. Nominations happen in the fall so visit junoawards.ca to stay informed. Surrey, Vancouver, BC - we are the epicentre of the South Asian music scene, and with the JUNOS coming to Vancouver next year, let's ensure we are on full display!" Firstly congratulations and we'll deserved to Karan! For the record YOU (meaning we all) do have the power to make change and I love this for all South Asians and other underrecognized groups and their phenomenal music and musical abilities. It is communities that have the ability to create and introduce new categories. Yes, there is a process but its worth it. I've helped 1 new category in the Latin/Spanish genre get to final reviews and another one in the Afro beats/music space is en route. I encourage those with passion (and the numbers to back it up), to connect with CARAS, find out the steps/process and turn some work into a trailblazing reality for futures to come!
Fully agree. Karan Aujla's win highlights South Asian music's global impact, but broader representation is crucial. We need expanded categories and education on the nomination process to ensure all deserving artists are recognized. Let's unite to amplify our voices and showcase our vibrant community at the JUNOs. Count me in for the advocacy ahead!
We need to also start including more diverse artists in our community to really represent South Asian Music at events & festivals.

7moExcellent points Harpo Mander One win is exactly that … one win. What we want is to be part of the system in its entirety, and you have clearly identified the changes needed. Thank you for taking the time to articulate the nuances of what needs to happen next!
