Our latest podcast episode explores the differences - and similarities - between the two. My podcast guest is Susan Skerritt, a hugely experienced Director and NED who has held leadership roles with premier banking institutions, including positions as Chair, CEO, and President of Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas. Susan is someone who’s pursued global board opportunities throughout her career, and has always operated in - and enjoyed - the global business world. It will come as no surprise to learn that there are differences in the ways in which US and UK boards operate, from structure, responsibilities and philosophical differences. Great talk between Dodge Woodall & Simon Jeffries. Through stories of his time in the special forces, we hear Simon's thoughts about what mental toughness is and isn't, the power of process and the impact of unconscious bias. What particularly fascinated me was how during the selection process - 4 weeks in the jungle - soldiers aren't given any feedback. They're alone with no idea how they're doing..... and it is this that leads to many voluntarily withdrawing. Later, during performance reviews many discover that they were actually doing really well, but without any feedback they "get into their own heads". This led me to think about remote working and the frequency/quality of feedback people are getting. For leaders and managers, this is an incredibly important aspect of managing engagement, productivity and the wellbeing of your team.
