Why does an academy need to fundraise? Philanthropic support turbo-charges all we do. External supporters’ belief in our work allows us to provide a richer, fuller education to over 45,000 students, ensuring every student has the opportunity to flourish, no matter their socio-economic starting point. But what does that actually mean for an individual student, on a cold January morning? See the impact for yourself. Donor support makes a difference across every aspect of all 54 of our academies, which are deliberately located in areas of socioeconomic disadvantage. This means we often work in communities which have had generational experience of educational inequality because of their relative disadvantage. Some of the students we work with need additional support to be able to achieve at the same level as they're more advantaged peers. Donor funded tutoring is one of the key ways we're supporting students to bridge this gap. And meet their potential. They really have got an incredible work ethic and they really want to do well. They're incredibly driven. These students absolutely aren't they? You know, even the ones that are considered to be. Poorly behaving students come to me and they are working their socks off. Plus they're all coming from. Not the greatest backgrounds, you know, So to be given a tutor that the parents probably couldn't afford, you know, in school, I think it's an amazing thing. Yeah. And I think it's really benefiting them. As we all know, a good education extends far beyond the classroom. In our secondary Academy is one of the key ways that donors supporters is by providing access to trips, opportunities and experiences that would not otherwise be available to them, playing a key role in their holistic education and future life opportunities. And I think the important thing with cultural capital, and I'm a real believer in this, as well as the extra, the clubs, the trips, the visits, which of course are hugely meaningful. And all of us as adults can remember the trips we were taking on. I remember going to taken to Stratford to listen to a lecture on a third one. I felt like such a grown up and that someone really cared to, to take me there. When students always talk about trips being, you know, the most significant part. But I also believe in cultural capital being a fundamental part of their curriculum. And for me that. Is hugely through literacy and through oversea because if you give the students, give our students the tools, the vocabulary to express themselves and there is a huge world then that they're going to feel more confident in. Donor funding is crucial in advancing our work, helping us to support more students to break the link between their backgrounds and their future life chances. We're really ambitious for our students and we're doing amazing work to help them succeed, and this means we keep aiming higher.

Philanthropic partnership building is improvisational but must be done with integrity. Integrity requires: Doing what is best for all parties involved, not getting one to do for the other Trying to build what will last, not just get by Showing how giving to the organization creates a societal ripple effect, not a better balance sheet Leaving more to the future than what was inherited from the past It not about organization need, it's a demonstration of what it can do It's putting more effort into doing what has been promised than raising more

Is it worth it for you to pursue that small(er) grant? Is it worth the time and effort to review the opportunity, submit the proposal, follow up with the potential donor, and more? Maybe! It *could* be worth it, but that's not always the case. When it IS worth it, there could be lots of benefits... including opening a door to a foundation that is making a smaller gift now, but has the capacity to make a larger gift in the future. 🤫 Pssst... I've got a secret for you: 💸 One of the best ways your nonprofit organization can secure a larger grant is: start with a small grant. Smaller grants can be a great way to build a relationship with a foundation, so you can eventually transition that smaller donation into a much bigger donation. But, that's not always the case. Sometimes there will be potential to elevate that gift in the future, but sometimes that's not the case. And you don't want to sink endless hours into a grant proposal where the return on investment just doesn't make it worthwhile. 🤷♀️ So how do you know if it's worth it to pursue that smaller grant?
