Everyone who is interviewed during the course of an administrative investigation has the right to be free from discrimination. This means you cannot be seen to treat one interviewee differently to another nor showing favouritism to one interviewee over another. If you can't demonstrate consistency in this area, expect to be challenged. One way of ensuring your interviewing processes are non-discriminatory is to implement a standardised investigative interviewing procedure across your institution. We've just released an online course for schools on investigative interviewing. It takes less than 90-mins and is self-directed. Participants gain an understanding of the basic legal and ethical principles underpinning interviewing processes and are introduced to the PEACE interviewing framework. #Safeguarding #SaferRecruiting Stop posting photos of your degree and professional development certificates. Why? Because this is how fraudsters copy certificates and pass them off as real. UNESCO estimates “the worldwide fake degree industry has grown from US$1 billion in 2015 to US$22 billion in 2022. Experts estimate that 4.7 billion people hold or have held fake diplomas.” True story: I worked with someone whose degrees were fake- they had been “teaching” for 30 years + in China and the Middle East. Their LinkedIn profile was also made up with false claims of being a Principal in multiple schools. Despite reporting to LinkedIn, they are still active and attract many consulting jobs. Because they were / are not in the UK, there is very little that can be done. I tried every organisation to ensure they never worked with children again. So when you are recruiting: ✔️ Ensure that certificates are attested. ✔️ HR carries out random checks listed on the CV ✔️ Police checks are international ✔️ References come from registered email addresses and are from the Head or Board member ✔️Open references are checked and verified. ✔️ Be clear about what documents you want - don’t accept multiple CPD certificates unless relevant documents to visa / job requirements. ✔️ Put a Safer Recruitment statement on your website and job postings. Make it clear you will report fraudulent findings to the local authorities. ✔️ Ensure your organisation has a robust Whistleblowing policy in place. If you are concerned about a colleague’s credentials, put your Safeguarding hat on and ask yourself the following question: What if you do nothing? Healthcare, law, engineering...these are just a few of the industries where I've found professional identity formation is a REQUIRED part of their training, education, and professional development programs. That's right, REQUIRED. It's required because these industries understand that "professional identity is a process of enculturation into the actions, interactions, values, and norms of a chosen profession." Yes, people needs to gain skills and knowledge to be prepared to DO the work. That's what upskilling and workforce development is about. However, they also need training and support on how to BE this new identity they're becoming. Think about that. It makes sense, right? In fact, when we don't explicitly provide professional identity support, then we create a homogenous profession where everyone tries to "be" the way they think they're supposed to be, which undermines the core aspects of creating a diverse, inclusive field. My question to you is this: Why is professional identity development predominantly in medical and legal education? Why do they see the value of this and it's not everywhere else? What would happen if we made professional identity development a core part of training for ALL professionals in whatever field they choose to pursue? #professionalidentity #upskilling #workforcedevelopment #careerbelonging #morethanmytitle

I transitioned into workplace investigations after almost 12 years of criminal investigations where the buzzword was “victim-centric” - the idea that the victim, or “complainant”, is at the centre of the investigation. To a certain extent, I took this mindset into my workplace investigations. But I’ve had this idea challenged and modified the way I frame things. What do you think? Who sits at the centre of a workplace investigation? Complainant? Respondent? Witnesses? Employer? Investigator? Or other? 📌I help educators conduct investigations into students and staff that everyone can trust. I conduct workplace investigations in person or remotely. ♻️Find this post valuable? 🎉 Happy New Year, Polk County! 🎉 As we ring in 2025, we're answering one of the Top 10 Questions People Ask About Working in Law Enforcement: What qualifications do I need to become a law enforcement officer? To start, you’ll need a high school diploma or GED. From there, academy training includes meeting the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) standards, which typically involve: Push-ups: Measuring upper body strength. Sit-ups: Evaluating core strength. 1.5-mile run: Testing cardiovascular endurance. Obstacle course: Demonstrating agility, speed, and adaptability. Dummy drag or carry: Simulating an injured-person rescue. The hiring process also includes a background investigation and testing, such as: The Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT): Assessing the foundational skills needed to succeed in the academy. Additional steps at some agencies may involve a polygraph, CVSA, psychological evaluation, physical agility test, medical screening, oral boards, and interviews with staff. It might sound rigorous, but each step is designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in law enforcement. Don’t doubt yourself—this could be the year you take the first step toward your dream! From all of us at the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, we wish you a safe and prosperous New Year! 🥳#NewYear2025 #ServeWithPride #PolkStrong
