As the Duluth Area Chamber’s young professionals initiative, Fuse Duluth has spent the past 20 years dedicated to connecting and empowering emerging leaders in the community. Committed to professional development, networking, and community involvement, Fuse aims to recruit and retain young talent as well as cultivate the next generation of business leaders in Duluth. “Leadership is producing results.” - JM Leon The post COVID-19 work environment is a unique one. Certainly not the same as the one I came into 25 years ago. Leaders have to think different and creatively about how we recruit and retain employees. Coming here a little over 2 years ago to a division that was hovering around 30% vacancy, we embarked on a new approach to recruit and retain employees. Forward facing, community outreach. Attending recruitment job fairs and advocating the work we do. Educating young people about a great career in local government and JCW. We began the work of a unique award winning career progression plan, that builds on the County’s leadership philosophy and approach. Combine these things with the work County leadership has done with salaries and benefits, and we have ourselves results. This week, all our line cleaning/inspection positions are staffed. We have offers out to candidates for all our other vacancies other than 1. Together, we have shrank our nearly 30% vacancy from 2 years ago to < 3%. All of this while implementing a new leadership approach into a division of 164 people with my O&M leadership team. We raised the bar along the way. Results. 🌟 In 2022, we launched the KBR Pathways program, which is an internal career fair, in direct response to feedback from our People Perspectives Survey. Employees wanted to learn more about opportunities within the organization so over the past year and a half, 13 different business leaders presented overviews of their business, skillsets required, and open job opportunities across KBR. We are excited to transition this program to focus on "Skills of the Future".
