I’ve been thinking a lot about this article in the last couple of days, as I’ve seen responses from my friends in the orchestra world. As a career advisor to emerging performers hoping for a full-time career as orchestra musicians, my dilemma is not knowing how to educate my students to protect themselves and how to advocate for others who have been harmed in the workplace. How can I in good conscience advise young women to sub in an orchestra— even one as prestigious as NYP— when they can be assaulted by a union-backed member and then ignored? How can music schools like my institution, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music , join this conversation and support our students hoping to work in this environment?

A truly independent contractor arrangement provides parties with the freedom to contract without many of the constraints applicable to employment relationships. However, not all contractor relationships are the same. While some contractors are truly "independent", others are "dependent" on their relationship for livelihood. In the latter case, the freedom to contract can be limited by implied obligations such as notice of termination requirements, and by express obligations, such as the statutory right to form and be part of unions. https://lnkd.in/efmabXH3

****Timing can be everything**** I regularly advise my clients that it is not always WHAT you do when it comes to People related decisions but WHEN and HOW you do it that dictates how your population reacts and views you. Confirming redundancies mid-performance is certainly not “best practice”. Businesses need to ensure they have thought through various timing implications as well as who delivers the message as both of these have an impact on the way a decision lands. 💔💼 It’s a harsh reality when you find yourself barely making a livable wage, just enough to cover basic expenses like housing. If I’m constantly working to pay my bills, how am I supposed to pursue anything else in life? When the majority of my time and energy goes into simply surviving, opportunities for growth, education, or even personal fulfillment seem out of reach. It’s disheartening to feel trapped in a cycle where hard work doesn’t translate into financial stability or the ability to invest in my future. We need to address this systemic issue and advocate for fair wages that allow individuals to thrive, not just survive.
