ACCIDENT DURING INTERNSHIP!
This particular one happened recently and I can't but share how it gave me a somewhat eventful experience while performing a crude fiber analysis. The day turned out to be one of those that reminds you of the unpredictability of laboratory work and the importance of staying vigilant.
The analysis began as usual, with me carefully preparing the samples and setting up the apparatus. The procedure involved boiling the samples in a solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), a process I had carried out a few times without incident. However, that day, something unexpected occurred.
As the solution reached its boiling point, a sudden and forceful splashing of the NaOH solution occurred, catching me completely off guard. The caustic nature of NaOH made the situation potentially dangerous, and I reacted swiftly, stepping back to avoid contact with the hot, corrosive liquid. Thankfully, I was wearing the appropriate protective gear, which minimized any risk of injury. Nonetheless, the incident left me shaken.
In the moments that followed, I paused to assess the situation. It became clear to me that the splashing had been caused by a slight oversight in the procedure. The heat had been turned up too quickly, causing the solution to boil more vigorously than intended. Additionally, the conical flask I was using had been slightly overfilled, which contributed to the overflow because of its small opening. Using a glass beaker afterwards was better as it had a larger opening than the flask allowing enough air to cool the foaming property of the NaOH while boiling.
After ensuring that the area was safe and the equipment was unharmed, I carefully cleaned up the spill and took a moment to reflect. This incident was a stark reminder of the importance of patience and attentiveness in the laboratory. It underscored the necessity of wearing proper protective equipment at all times, even when conducting procedures that seem routine. It also highlighted the unpredictable nature of laboratory work and the importance of remaining calm and composed in the face of unexpected challenges.
Once I had regrouped, I resumed the analysis, this time with even greater attention to detail. I gradually brought the solution to a boil, monitoring it closely to prevent any further splashing. The rest of the procedure went smoothly, and I was able to obtain accurate results for the crude fiber content of the analysis.
In retrospect, I am grateful for the experience, as it has made me more diligent and mindful in my approach to laboratory analysis. I now carry with me a heightened awareness of the potential hazards and a renewed commitment to safety and precision in all my scientific endeavors.
