NY Fed Enters International Research for Simplifying Cross-Border Payments with Tokenization The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has joined six other central banks in international research to explore the use of blockchain technology for speeding up international payments. The research project is being led by the Bank for International Settlements. Next up was a panel entitled ‘Woods for the Trees', with Ekaterina Marshall, David Castle and Ronnie Driver, MSc CFA. The financial services and treasury landscape is continuing to evolve with the jury still out on the success of various innovations. From challenger banks providing services to under served populations, to the introduction of CBDC to the need to test access to contingency activities and the future regulatory regime there is a lot to consider. They covered emerging 2024 Treasury topics including: - categories of new speculative investments (unbacked cryptocurrency), new forms of money (CBDCs & private stable coins), application of underlying technologies - retail CBDC impact of 'dis-intermediation' of commercial banks and speed of LCR change from displacement of stock of deposits -> impact of wholesale funding markets -> cost of credit - velocity of reputational risk crystallising in the digital age - impacts of optimising cost of depositor protection vs credit protection using LCR cash limits, sovereign bonds vs cash, importance of prepositioning of collateral - regulatory appetite to encourage competition from challengers vs sector concentration risk - principles of risk management using a suite of metrics rather than only individual regulatory metrics.
