The Inquiry-Driven History Classroom: A Case Study in Student-Led Historical Seminars The traditional lecture-based model in history education is giving way to inquiry-driven pedagogies, reflecting a paradigm shift towards student-centered learning. This pedagogical transformation is grounded in the belief that active engagement with primary sources, critical analysis, and collaborative knowledge construction foster deeper historical understanding. Empirical evidence suggests that inquiry-based learning enhances students' critical thinking skills, historical analysis, and overall content retention. In my own practice as an AP World History Modern and AP United States History teacher, I have developed "Historical Seminars," a student-led inquiry-based approach that has yielded remarkable success. These seminars empower students to select topics of interest, conduct research using primary and secondary sources, and lead discussions with their peers. The results have been transformative: students demonstrate increased engagement, a deeper grasp of historical context, and enhanced critical thinking skills. They become historians themselves, actively participating in the construction of historical knowledge and historical argumentation rather than passive recipients of information. The shift towards inquiry-driven instruction is not without challenges. It requires careful planning, a robust selection of resources, and a willingness to cede some control to the students. However, the benefits far outweigh the difficulties. By embracing inquiry-based learning, we cultivate a generation of historically literate citizens equipped with the skills to navigate a complex and interconnected world. As educators, we are invited to reflect on our pedagogical practices and consider the transformative potential of inquiry-driven instruction. In our survey we find: Students (13-15 years old) report being to a low extent involved in peer feedback practices, but to a lesser extent in mathematics then in EFL. Awareness raising of learning goals was the most important variable for students’ experiences of peer feedback practices, and even more important for students in mathematics teaching then in EFL. Self-monitoring, self-efficacy, and enjoyment were positively associated with peer feedback practices. Enjoyment was positively associated with peer feedback practices, but a neglected dimension of teaching in the two subjects. Students reported low degrees of anxiety, and low levels of enjoyment in both subjects. If you would like to know more - the article is open access, so free to read.
