As a manager I always try to keep an eye on people pleasing behavior and remind my team to set appropriate boundaries. I tell them they can blame me if they refuse to help someone they have historically helped even when it wasn't necessary. Whenever I needed someone to cover after hours/weekends/holidays I would ask for volunteers. If the same people pleaser volunteers too often I'll remind them they've done more than their fair share already. As a useful side effect, this usually prompts someone else to step up without further prodding by me.

Indeed, people-pleasing can derail both personal well-being and career progression. According to Hailey Magee, author of *Stop People Pleasing and Find Your Power*, many fall into this pattern due to a desire for validation and fear of conflict. However, this can lead to burnout, reduced productivity, and resentment. Surprising fact: consistently people-pleasing can lower self-esteem over time. Magee advises setting clear boundaries and prioritizing self-care. Managers can help by fostering a culture of open communication and encouraging employees to assert their needs and limits. #MentalHealth #WorkLifeBalance #StopPeoplePleasing

It's especially prevalent in the HR profession. It's one of those things that I coach up and coming leaders on. It holds you back. You can't please everyone all the time!
