I suggest reading a great article by our friend and Board Member, David Hoffman. Recent international and national efforts have highlighted the public health importance of Alzheimer’s disease, emphasizing the urgent need for aggressive action. In January 2011, President Obama signed the National Alzheimer’s Project Act into law, establishing a National Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Disease Research, Care, and Services. This led to the creation of the first National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease in 2012. The Department of Health and Human Services publishes a new National Plan each year. In a collaborative effort with national and state partners, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been instrumental in developing public health road maps. Notably, the 2013 Road Map focused on state and local actions in the United States. It's of utmost importance that we continue to create and update these public health road maps. As Hoffman points out, these road maps are crucial in addressing key challenges in the fight against Alzheimer's disease, such as caregiver support and education, early detection and comprehensive planning, professional and provider education, and public awareness. Life Sciences Consultant Specialising Rare Diseases | Coach & Mentor Regulatory & Payer processes | Helping Life science organisations develop and respond to policy | Exceptional Chair, Moderator & Facilitator
On International Rare Disease Day, it's crucial to recognize the incredible strength, resilience, and determination exhibited by the rare disease community. As someone who initially stepped into this field unaware of the immense challenges faced by those affected, I've come to understand the profound struggles in obtaining diagnoses, accessing specialist care, and receiving adequate support across various facets of life. We should celebrate the success we have had so far. However, a staggering 95% of rare diseases still have unmet needs. Why? The complexity of these conditions often leads to fragmented efforts in research, diagnosis, and treatment. Additionally, health and social care systems may struggle to adequately address the diverse needs of individuals with rare diseases, from medical care to education, employment, and importantly psychological support. To truly make a difference, all stakeholders must unite in a collective effort. Collaboration and knowledge-sharing among researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, industry leaders, patient advocacy groups, and affected individuals are paramount. By pooling resources, expertise, and insights, we can amplify our impact and drive meaningful change. I am delighted to have worked with many people who are open to this approach. Kirsty Hoyle Louise Fish Lugdivine Le Dez Andrew Dempsey Aldona Zygmunt FIPRA Public Affairs Karen Facey to name a few. Together, we can transform the landscape for rare diseases, not only improving outcomes for those directly affected but also setting a precedent for healthcare innovation and inclusivity that reverberates far beyond the realm of rare diseases. Let's make today's actions resonate into a future where no one's struggle is overlooked, and every voice is heard. #RareDiseaseDay #RareDiseases #StrongerTogether
