Department of Social and Political Sciences: Research, Scholarship & Practice at Nottingham Trent University
MIDLANDS CONFERENCE IN CRITICAL THOUGHT 2024 Centre for Policy, Citizenship and Society + Department of Social and Political Sciences, Nottingham Trent University April 5th to April 6th, 2024 Call for Papers – deadline December 6th 2023 The Call for Papers Proposals is now open for the 1st annual Midlands Conference in Critical Thought (MCCT), which will be hosted and supported by the Centre for Policy, Citizenship and Society at Nottingham Trent University on April 5th and April 6th 2024. As with the London Conference in Critical Thought, the MCCT is an annual interdisciplinary conference that provides a forum for emergent critical scholarship, broadly construed. The conference is free for all to attend and follows a non-hierarchical model that seeks to foster opportunities for intellectual critical exchanges where all are treated equally regardless of affiliation or seniority. There are no plenaries, and the conference is envisaged as a space for those who share intellectual approaches and interests but who may find themselves at the margins of their academic department or discipline. There is no pre-determined theme for the MCCT. We welcome paper proposals via a 500 word abstract – PLEASE SUBMIT VIA A WORD DOCUMENT to midlandscritical@gmail.com. Any questions? Please email us at midlandscritical@gmail.com. The deadline for Paper submissions is Wednesday December 6th 2023. Ricky Gee

Excellent briefing. Difficult to choose which part to highlight, but I will go with "Universities have a crucial role in de-risking the research and innovation pipeline. These institutions often take early, high-risk ideas to the point of validated proof-of-concept technology, at which point companies are more willing to carry the innovation forward to market." Greenhouse gas removal is no exception. Without discovery research, anchored by universities, there simply won't be the scaled up solutions that we need by 2050 if there isn't the investment today. Not just a UK problem either - there will be nuances from country to country - but ultimately a global problem.
📃In our new briefing 'Universities: A crucial component of UK R&D' we have drawn on the expertise of our membership to capture the diverse benefits that university-led R&D brings to the research system and society. Explore the briefing to find out more ⬇️⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eiSZ4DnA In this briefing, we highlight six key themes and nine case studies, expanding the evidence base on the value university R&D brings across the UK, and ultimately supporting the sector’s advocacy for these vital institutions. Six key benefits of University R&D identified by CaSE: 1. Knowledge and Expertise 2. Infrastructure and Facilities 3. Convener and Arbitrator 4. Civic and Cultural Contributor 5. Talent and Skills 6. De-risking Research and Innovation 🗣️“The financial challenges facing universities across the UK are significant. Our briefing demonstrates that all those that care about the future of UK R&D must also care about the future of our universities."- Daniel Rathbone, Deputy Executive Director, CaSE.

When is Justice Transformative? ⚖️ At our DIT Day conference "How to transform a university", Ana Vasques and Agni Kalfagianni will host a roundtable discussion on this topic. This roundtable aims to explore what a transformative research justice agenda looks like, which societal actors are likely to support it, and how to organize transformative justice initiatives in practice. The roundtable involves speakers from different perspectives to discuss the following questions: 🟢 What issues of injustice are at play in your area of work/research? 🟢 Which are the responses to these injustices (if any), who supports them, and how would you distinguish their transformative justice potential? 🟢 What does a transformative justice research agenda mean for you? 🟢 Which are inspiring ways for universities to (co)organize/support justice initiatives that can transform politics, societies, and the university itself? If you're interested then join us on June 4th - sign up here: https://lnkd.in/gXFMBriy Alessandra Arcuri, Daphina Misiedjan, Ph.D., Danny Vader, Hélène Van Engelen

Professor & Founding Director, Center for Governance and Markets at University of Pittsburgh, Nonresident Scholar at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Today | 1:30pm ET: Looking forward to participating in this panel discussion with colleagues from around the university on the role of free speech in fostering the mission of universities. What is the difference between speech and expression? What role does civil discourse play in fostering an environment where speech is protected. One of the greatest challenges is that faculty and even administrators often fail to understand these rules and what they mean. https://lnkd.in/dVJR9mYx

Assistant Professor of Teaching and Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department of Sociology, University of California, San Diego
Very excited to learn from and share my work with my Teaching Professor colleagues from across the University of California system tomorrow and Friday at the third annual Tenure Track Teaching Professors' Conference held at UC Irvine! Here is the abstract for the workshop I'll be running tomorrow afternoon: Beyond the Basics: Tackling the Complexities of Inclusive and Equitable Teaching at Large Public Universities Over the last two decades, the scholarship of teaching learning has provided an extensive set of evidenced-based suggestions for creating student-centered, inclusive, and equitable courses. However, these strategies often overlook the unique challenges faculty encounter at large public institutions. Instructors at these schools frequently manage several large classes each term, complicating the adoption of labor-intensive, inclusive teaching practices that call for highly personalized attention to students. Moreover, they teach diverse student populations facing both symbolic and structural inequities, issues not easily resolved within a single course or academic term. This workshop introduces a systematic approach to understanding and addressing the challenges that both students and instructors face at these institutions. It offers practical methods for enhancing course inclusivity and equity. Organized around a case-study methodology, the workshop is an interactive experience from beginning to end. See you there! #UCsystem #UCSD #TeachingProfessors #UCIrvine #pedagogy #highered #sociology
