SUSTAIN-HTA represented at the GetReal Institute’s 2024 Annual Conference, entitled “A Growing Convergence: RWE for Regulatory and HTA Decision-Making” in Utrecht (The Netherlands). Shahid Hanif, Managing Director of the GetReal Institute, who is a consortium member of SUSTAIN-HTA hosted the conference. Iñaki Gutiérrez-Ibarluzea (BIOEF – Fundación Vasca de Innovación e Investigación Sanitarias) participated in an Oxford-style debate, arguing in favour of “This house believes we are making good progress towards adopting RWE as part of the HTA Regulation”. Anja Schiel (Norwegian Medical Products Agency) presented the differing evidence requirements of regulatory and HTA bodies in decision-making, explaining how the latter must use more relevant local evidence to support internal validity and context. Prof. Wim Goettsch (Utrecht University) took part, on behalf of SUSTAIN-HTA, with Iñaki Gutierrez-Ibarluzea (BIOEF) and other Regulatory, HTA, academic and patient stakeholders, in the closing “Regulatory and HTA Town Hall” discussion with the audience on what they believe should be the top priorities of the field. Iñaki Gutierrez-Ibarluzea focused on the robustness of innovative methods to reduce uncertainty around the use of RWD, stressing the need to include the voices of payers, citizens and policymakers and calling for greater transparency. Prof. Goettsch noted the need to leverage ongoing European efforts, such as the SUSTAIN-HTA project. He appreciated the openness between HTA bodies and regulators and suggested the GetReal Institute foster more dialogue with other HTA bodies and greater collaboration with professional associations to enhance awareness and use of RWD.
