What makes a good clinical specialist? Is it someone who can just be clinically sound? Is it someone who can only cover cases? Is it someone that can help move the chain? Do they need to be “selling” like a Territory Manager? Should they have the same responsibilities? Should they be held to the same standard as a sales rep? Clinicals are the back bone of every organization who has them, especially in neuromodulation. They are in the trenches just like their TM. In my opinion they should be viewed more than just a clinical. Every organization wants clinical specialists to do more, yet when it comes to promotions or upward trajectory that’s when the excuses comes out. “You don’t have sales experience”. “You aren’t a TM.” “Do you know how to sell?” “You didn’t have a quota over your head.” That might be true to some extent, but is it a fair measurement? If you invest in your people they stay. Be honest. Honesty gets you further than lying. There is nothing worse than an employee or team member finding out the truth. If that person isn’t ready to be TM or ready for the next clinical level, explain that to them. Tell them why. Help them get there. If they aren’t your top pick, then tell them so they can find a place that will make them their top pick. You want retention? You want culture? You want the best of the best? BE HONEST. If you can't beat'em, join'em... Nick Jasmon used my Nick Saban and Pat McAfee video before I could, so I will add to and support his post! The relationship between sales and nursing is critical in a community's success. When they aren't synergized it may feel as if other directors have to take sides, and if that happens we have a big problem. Truth is Sales has 1 job and Nursing has at least 10 jobs! Sales people need to acknowledge this fact and work with the Nursing department to accomplish goals together. If you are a sales director, acknowledge the hectic schedule, and ask what is your availability this week that I can schedule assessments. (knowing that we probably will have opportunities that come up with no warning but we gave schedule respect proactively) Walk in a grateful energy when your nurse makes the effort for the move in. Publicly acknowledge the effort the nurse has put in to ensuring a smooth transition. Sales is a team sport it is not a 1 person job, and it is time to start honoring the collaborations rather than forcing compliance. Encouragement and kindness are magical forces when we use them correctly. Success in a community is a team sport. In short, treatment programs will never grow to their potential if this one simple concept isn't given proper attention. These last few months have been a roller coaster for me emotionally, physically and professionally. I had my dream job with an amazing team and suddenly I was told the entire company was closing. I really questioned whether I wanted to continue in the cannabis industry like I know many have. I didn’t see very many opportunities that matched what I wanted for my future and after taking some time to think and reflect, I decided to make my own opportunities. I know this industry needs help and I know a lot of sales reps and aspiring reps need help too. Opening my business comes from a place of wanting to help and wanting to find where I fit in this industry (long-term). Do you ever question yourself or why you are doing what you do day in and day out? I do! 🙋♀️ Even though I absolutely love what I do, there are times that I am not sure if I am making an impact or just being a nuisance. 😊 Sales and Staffing is not for the faint of heart. There's a rare breed of commercial leader out there I'd recommend keeping an eye out for to any start-up leaders looking to launch and scale their Med-Device. Typically, the path of many CCO's or Sales & Marketing VP's comes via the Sales vertical of Clinical specialist - TM - RM - RD - VP, and then overall commercial leader. Whilst there's nothing wrong with this; and of course there are exceptional people out there who've navigated this vertical, this can sometimes lead to your Sales & Marketing functions being siloed, which needless to say can end up being extremely costly. The rare breed I'm talking about are those that have purposely held specialist roles in both Sales and Marketing on their route to the top commercial job, whether it be having moved from Sales to Marketing, or vice versa. Sometimes you can find those even more well-rounded having also spent time in Market Access and Sales Training. If you want the commercial functions in your business truly aligning it's worth considering this profile when hiring your commercial leader.
