One of our 2024 Safety Initiatives at Haselden Construction was to develop short training video's which we call "Safety Policy Review" or SPR's. We have a fairly complex and comprehensive written safety and health program that can sometimes be difficult for managers to navigate. Our initiative was develop short training video's that simplify the main concepts of each policy and highlight the key components to increase knowledge and awareness of our written programs. What's cool about this process too is each video is fully developed by our safety team. Not only can we manage safe working conditions, but we can also make training videos!
Personal protective equipment. Hazards exist in every workplace in many different forms. Sharp edges, falling objects, flying sparks, chemicals, noise, and other potentially dangerous situations. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA requires that employers protect their employees from workplace hazards that can cause injury. When engineering controls, work practices, and administrative controls are not feasible or do not provide sufficient protection. Employers must provide personal protective equipment to their employees. And ensure that it is used. Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as PPE, is equipment warned to minimize exposure to a variety of job site hazards. I Protection All personnel must be equipped with proper eye protection appropriate for the task being performed. As a minimum, safety glasses will be worn in all areas. The exception to this is office trailers and parking lots where no physical hazards exist. All safety glasses must comply with ANSI Z87 point one requirements. By wearing ANSI Z 87.1 eyewear, you can help ensure you are provided with the necessary protection from potential impact hazards. If you wear prescription glasses, prescription safety glasses must be used. Prescription safety glasses will have lenses and frames that comply with ANSI Z87. And they must have side Shields that are permanently attached or detachable. Employees with prescription glasses that do not comply with ANSI Z87 will be required to wear safety glasses or goggles over their prescription glasses. Tinted or dark lenses will not be worn at night or in areas with low visibility. This includes interior work areas. Face Shields protect against nuisance dust, potential splashes or sprays of hazardous liquids, but will not provide adequate protection against impact hazards. When face Shields are required, they must be used in combination with safety glasses to provide additional protection against impact hazards. Hard hats. Hazelden requires all employees to wear a hard hat at all times while on the project. The only exception to this is an office, traders and parking lots or in designated areas where work is not taking place. The hard hat shall be inspected prior to work for cracks or damage to ensure your hard hat is in good condition. Metal hard hats, cowboy type hats and novelty hard hats are not permitted on Hazleton job sites. Hand protection. Gloves should be worn whenever performing work handling tools, equipment, chemicals, hot or cold materials, or surfaces on hazels and job sites. Gloves shall be worn when handling sharp or pointy objects using razor knives, pocket knives, utility knives, and insulation knives. Glove use and selection should be evaluated based on the task being performed and taken to consideration whether the glove meets durability requirements such as cut, puncture, heat or cold resistance. High visibility Clothing All site employees and contractors are required to wear an antsy Class 2 or better high visibility vest, jacket or shirt when on site. Anti Class 2 requires the outer garment to be high visibility and color and also contain horizontal and vertical reflective striping. Foot protection as a minimum. Substantial leather work boots are required when working on Haselden construction projects. Tennis shoes and shoes that do not provide ankle support are prohibited. In areas where the task requires more specific footwear such as rubber or PVC, boots shall be worn as appropriate for the task. Proper clothing, minimum dress code or body protection includes shirts with sleeves. Shirts will cover the full trunk and shoulders. No tank tops, tube tops or muscle shirts will be allowed. Shirts will not contain offensive pictures or words. Full length pants are required. Cut off jeans or shorts are not acceptable. Clothing shall not have large tears or rips which expose the employee's skin. Respiratory Protection. Respiratory protection is not typically required for standard daily construction activities. However, when working in environments with insufficient oxygen or harmful dust, fog, smoke, mists, fumes, gases, vapors, or sprays are present, respiratory protection may be required. In any workplace where respirators are required, Hazleton has established a written respiratory protection program. Employees and contractors are required to follow our written program. An effective respirator program must cover the following factors. One proper respirator selection. Two, employee training 3. Fit testing. 4 Inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and storage. 5. Medical evaluations. 6. Work area surveillances. 7. Air quality standards. In workplaces with no hazardous exposures, but where workers choose to use respirators voluntarily, certain written program elements may be required to prevent potential hazards associated with respirator use. When employees voluntarily use a respirator, they must be informed on basic information in the Appendix D of Osha's Respiratory Protection Standard. Please be aware when working with silica containing materials, respiratory protection may be required depending on the location and the duration of the work activity. If you have any questions or concerns regarding respiratory protection hazards, please talk with your supervisor. Hearing protection. Employees exposed the noise levels that exceed 85 decibels over an 8 hour time weighted average are required to wear hearing protection. Hearing protection needs to be worn when operating or working near equipment that emits loud noises such as powder actuated tools, gas powered tools, and cutting or grinding operations. If you are within 2 foot of another employee and you need to shout to communicate, this is a good indication that hearing protection is probably needed. Let's do a quick review of personal protective equipment I protection that complies with ANSI Z87. Point one is required while on site. Prescription eyewear must meet ANSI Z87 or over Shields are required. Hard hats are required at all times while on site. Gloves need to be worn at all times unless they create a greater hazard. Substantial leather work boots are required. When respirators are required, a written respiratory protection program must be followed. Hearing protection is required when exposed to loud noises.
