In Solidarity for a Green World: As COP29 approaches in Baku, Azerbaijan, all eyes are once again on world leaders as they gather to set a new #global #climate finance target. The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, which runs from November 11 to 22, 2024, is poised to redefine the approach to climate action funding, especially for developing nations. With the ambitious aim of replacing the 2009 goal of $100 billion per year, this new commitment is set to be more transparent and, importantly, more predictable. But amid these promises, a crucial question remains: will the funds reach the local communities that need them most? Government leaders often take the COP stage with inspiring speeches, pledging action on climate issues and introducing ambitious, multi-million-dollar projects. Yet, the flashy initiatives frequently overlook a key element, local communities. These communities often lack the basic resources to engage in climate action and may struggle to understand how their everyday efforts can be part of a global climate solution. Yet, they are also the first to feel the brunt of #climatechange, whether through droughts, floods, or erratic weather patterns. What if #climatefinance could work for these people, empowering them to find solutions tailored to their own landscapes and lifestyles? Funding practical, community-driven projects could lead to significant change, from sustainable agriculture to locally-led conservation efforts. Such initiatives, rooted in indigenous knowledge, hold the potential for lasting #impact. COP29 PRESIDENT SPEECH The COP29 President, Mukhtar Babayev in his opening speech has emphasized critical objectives aimed at driving urgent global climate action. Key priorities include staying within the 1.5°C warming target, and a call for all countries to commit to 1.5 aligned Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). There is an urgent need to establish the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, which would provide annual climate funding starting at a minimum of $100 billion, particularly for developing nations. COP29 in Baku is structured to foster collaboration and focus on diverse topics, such as finance, energy, technology, youth, urbanization, and biodiversity. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘆 of COP29 Azerbaijan and the focus is on Indigenous Peoples and Communities, as is our stat of the day. 🔢 To date, indigenous peoples voices have been largely marginalised to the fringes of previous COP summits but not now. It is increasingly recognised that indigenous peoples and communities MUST play a crucial and increasingly vital role in the fight against climate change: 🌎 Indigenous peoples make up just 𝟱% of the world's population 🌏 Indigenous peoples make up around 𝟭𝟱% of the world’s extreme poor 🌍 However, indigenous peoples steward and protect near 𝟴𝟬% of the world’s remaining biodiversity. And yet indigenous heritage, knowledge and experience, until recently, has been largely ignored when it comes to tackling climate change - regionally and globally. ---------------------- NO MORE SILOS - A HOLISITC APPROACH IS WHAT IS NEEDED Many nations all over the world still do not have policies or programmes that recognise the value of indigenous knowledge. For thousands of years, our indigenous communities have mastered how to live alongside nature in a way that other communities have not. This knowledge, experience, understanding and application is crucial in the fight against climate change - especially at a regional level. Applying this knowledge and understanding to mitigate at a regional level for regional level solutions that work for that region must be a key area of focus if we are to have any hope of staying within reach of any climate targets as set in the United Nations Paris agreement. Engaging First Nations people as equal stakeholders in the development of climate change is therefore a no brainer. We must be more focussed on holistic and out of the box thinking if we are seriously going to curb rising emissions and global warming. A siloed approach as mirrored in how COPs are currently delivered - Biodiversity COP/Climate COP/Desertification COP - won't solve anything, if anything it could be argued that the format slows progress. The heightened discourse from last week and this has just highlighted that more. Surely there is a better model? Could a holistic model and approach that thought more along the lines of . . . . indigenous solutions + AI + nature + finance + meteorology, might be more of what we are needing? What do you think? Wow. What a busy news day . . . 🌍 COP16 Colombia, the United Nations Emissions Gap report and International Day of Climate Action. Today is the International Day of Climate Action and it is also the day that the United Nations published their United Nations Emissions Gap report which has now provided us with a new figure to focus our minds . . . 3.1C. 🌡 The report indicates that if we only implement our current policies on combatting climate change, then the world could warm up by up to 3.1C by the end of the century. 🌊 The United Nations use the word 'catastrophic' when describing the negative impact on the planet that a 3.1C rise would bring - dramatic increases in extreme weather events including heatwaves and flooding resulting in climatic conditions so hot that it would be near impossible to work outside. For context, we have heated the planet by 1.1C so far and the effects are already being felt on so many levels across the world. The report's timing is no accident either as it is only a few weeks until the World's Leaders meet in Baku for COP29 Azerbaijan. Central to the COP29 Azerbaijan Summit will be each nation's plans called Nationally Determined Contributions. We'll be hearing an awful lot about these plans in the coming days. The United Nations Climate Chief has called these plans the single most important set of documents that will be produced this century. This makes this particular International Day of Climate Action even more important. The #COP29 #climate conference in Baku has left us with deep concerns. While some progress was made — such as concretizing the Global Adaptation Goal and outlining plans for further cooperation — the overall results fall painfully short of what’s needed. The financial commitments, though tripled to $300 billion, are far below the $1–1.3 trillion required. And when adjusted for inflation and the inclusion of loans, this is no real increase at all. “Climate finance must be grant-based, not loan-based, to uphold principles of climate justice”, says Christina Aebischer, Advisor Climate Adaptation & Advocacy at Helvetas. Switzerland and other industrialized nations failed to deliver, and their restrictive financial stance is eroding trust in the Global South. As Alliance Sud highlights, this financial shortfall has shaken the poorest countries and small island states, leaving them increasingly vulnerable to the climate crisis. Even more troubling, no significant steps were taken to phase out fossil fuels or accelerate the green transition. Science is clear: to stay below 1.5°C warming, emissions must be halved by 2030 — just 1,000 days away.
