Interesting article about digital health X Ozempic. As someone with a personal (and ongoing) weight loss journey + digital health fan I had some thoughts…
Current digital health solutions in my opinion don't encapsulate the true and complete human experience of weight loss, weight gain, diet culture, eating disorders and body dysmorphia (Sam Ajami not hyping digital health?!). Current solutions focus on the “easy fixes” - which is valid too, however we are technologically advanced enough to start looking at more comprehensive solutions. Addressing fundamental psychological challenges with weight loss and weight gain are as important, if not more so than the physical challenges.
In addition to this, from my personal experience and from hearing the conversations of those in my community - hype around microbiome, fad diets and glucose tracking is creating a cloud of “information” with no clear guidance or emphasis on how to use it or education on the fundamental physiological mechanisms of weight management.
With limited longitudinal data on Ozempic, expectations need to be managed and the message should be clear than there isn't a silver bullet (or miracle drug) for weight loss - but a multifaceted approach combining lifestyle and mindset changes, where digital health can certainly be of help!
(this is separate to the medical value of GLP-1 agonists for treating T2D etc.)
