Join Haub Law Professor Bridget Crawford and co-editor Lolita Buckner Inniss, JD, LLM, PhD, for the launch of their book, Social Movements and the Law: Talking About Black Lives Matter and #MeToo. Black Lives Matter and #MeToo are two of the most prominent twenty-first-century social movements in the United States. On the ground and on social media, more people have taken an active stance in support of either or both movements than almost any others in the country's history. Social Movements and the Law (University of California Press) brings together the voices of twelve scholars and public intellectuals to explore how Black Lives Matter and #MeToo unfolded—separately and together—and how they enrich, inform, and complicate each other. Please join the book's editors and contributors for this free on-line event exploring the intersections of both movements. 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟏𝟏, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝟔:𝟎𝟎 𝗽.𝗺. 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 | 𝟒:𝟎𝟎 𝗽.𝗺. 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 | 𝟑:𝟎𝟎 𝗽.𝗺. ⭐️𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗦 ⭐️ As Director of the Environmental Litigation Clinic at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, Professor Todd Ommen is passionate about environmental justice. Through his leadership, law students gain hands-on experience tackling real-world environmental issues, from protecting waterways to holding polluters accountable. Recently appointed the Executive Director of John Jay Legal Services, Inc., he now oversees applications and placements for all of the law school’s clinics and is dedicated to ensuring pro-bono representation is available to underserved communities in all areas of law, especially environmental, immigration and criminal work. With a strong commitment to mentorship, Professor Ommen equips his students with the skills they need to become the next generation of environmental advocates. His advice to students? “Take the opportunities you are given. It’s hard to go to work directly in your dream job from law school. Learning to be a great lawyer can take several stages – just like my career did. From general litigation, to working for the state, to working for a plaintiff-side environmental firm, to this. I learned something at each step, so I would say open your eyes to all opportunities.” Learn more about Professor Ommen in this Q&A: https://brnw.ch/21wNNy2 #lawschool #environmentallaw #environmentaljustice

MEET SAMANTHA MARIANO '25 ⚖️ A single mom with two children, Haub Law Flex JD student Samantha describes her path to law school as “unconventional at best.” Following her decision to leave an abusive situation, Samantha was referred to Connecticut Legal Services through a local domestic violence organization. “I was represented by an attorney who not only helped me regain my independence but inspired me to dedicate my life to helping others,” says Samantha. The first in her family to go to law school, it was her grandparents who raised her who instilled in Samantha the importance of hard work and pursuing her dreams. “No matter what challenges I faced, my grandfather, and later my grandmother, would always tell me ‘good thing you’re tough!’ and that became my battle cry which allowed me to persevere through many of life’s challenges.” While working full-time as a Trusts and Estates paralegal and taking care of her young family, Samantha has fully emerged herself in all that Haub Law’s Flex JD program offers. She is the FLEX representative for both Phi Alpha Delta and the Older Wiser Law Students (OWLS) group. Most recently, Samantha has achieved another dream of hers – she was accepted and will participate in Haub Law’s Study Abroad Program at Oxford. With graduation on the horizon, Samantha intends to focus her practice primarily on Trusts, Estates and Elder Law, but notes that she will never forget where she came from. “My goal is to return to Connecticut Legal Services eventually and dedicate my pro bono work to helping other survivors of domestic violence. Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University Professors Emily Waldman and Bridget Crawford announce the release of their book “Hot Flash: How the Law Ignores Menopause and What We Can Do About It,” co-authored with Naomi R. Cahn, the Justice Anthony M. Kennedy Distinguished Professor of Law and Nancy L. Buc '69 Research Professor in Democracy and Equity at the University of Virginia School of Law. The book, published by Stanford University Press, shows how silence and stigma around many aspects of reproductive health—from menstruation to menopause—have historically created the conditions in which bias and discrimination can flourish. The authors’ goal is to replace the legal and cultural silence surrounding menopause with a deeper understanding. As Professor Waldman explains, “Just as legal protections have evolved to address the challenges of pregnancy and breastfeeding in the workplace, the law can also support those experiencing menopause. By building on existing frameworks, we can ensure that employees affected by menopause have the support they need, ultimately fostering more inclusive work environments." “Menopause is an inevitable experience for approximately half the population, yet it remains under-discussed in both law and culture,” said Professor Crawford. “Our hope is that this book will shine a light on the legal and social gaps surrounding menopause and also spark meaningful reforms that promote equity and understanding for all people.” 🔗 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘: https://brnw.ch/21wNEbn 𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗟𝗔𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗛 𝗢𝗡 10/28 𝗔𝗧 1:00 𝗣.𝗠.: https://brnw.ch/21wNEbm #lawfaculty #lawscholarship #hotflash #menopause #womenandthelaw Stanford University Press

The Haub Law community came together on Monday, October 7 to mark the beginning of the new Supreme Court term (known as “First Monday”) with a panel discussion examining some of the blockbuster cases of the past term. Constitutional Law Professor Emily Gold Waldman moderated the discussion with Haub Law Professors Alexander K.A. Greenawalt, Katrina Fischer Kuh, and Josh Galperin. The panel focused on the Supreme Court’s decisions on Trump v. United States and how it may reshape executive power, as well as the implications of the Loper Bright case on administrative and environmental law – examining the Seven County Infrastructure Coalition v. Eagle County, a case that speaks to the scope of review for federal actions under the National Environmental Policy Act. The Supreme Court Roundup Program has become an annual tradition at the Law School, providing a rich dialogue and deeper understanding of some of the nation’s most polarizing cases and what they might mean for the rule of law and for our society. #lawschool #supremecourt #firstmonday

Earlier this week, Haub Law welcomed Mississippi-born artist and activist Genesis Be for a private screening of the documentary, Mississippi Turning, followed by an interactive discussion. The powerful film tells the story of Be’s courageous efforts to remove the symbol of hate embedded in her home state’s flag. It takes viewers on her journey of dialogue and understanding, capturing the complexities of heritage, identity, and progress along the way. After the film, Be answered questions and engaged law students in a workshop centering on “Difficult Conversations.” Using the Moral Courage Method, she shared 5 skills to help students turn polarizing issues into productive, trust-building opportunities. She emphasized the principles she’s learned to master difficult conversations such as those portrayed in the film, saying “It’s about speaking truth to power to my ego and lowering my emotional defense of fight or flight.” Thank you Genesis Be! Haub Law is proud to announce that the 2024 Ottinger Award for Faculty Achievement has been awarded to Professor Vanessa Merton posthumously. The Richard Ottinger Faculty Achievement Award is awarded annually by the Faculty Development Committee, in consultation with the Dean, in recognition of a full-time professor’s outstanding service to the law school, the legal profession, or both. The award generally is based on the faculty member’s outstanding service during the previous academic year. “While dealing with grave illness, Professor Vanessa Merton dedicated significant time and energy, at a moment when both were precious to her, to the Pace Immigration Justice Clinic,” said Professor Katrina Fischer Kuh, chair of the Faculty Development Committee. “From spearheading outreach efforts to help recruit highly qualified candidates to lead the Pace Immigration Justice Clinic, to contacting alumni and colleagues for their continued support of the Clinic, to working with family to help establish and fund the Vanessa Merton Immigration Justice Fellowship, Vanessa displayed outstanding service of the highest order, as she did throughout her career. This recognition in the form of the Ottinger Award for Faculty Achievement is a small way in which we can honor the time and energy that Professor Merton dedicated to the IJC over the last year, which will greatly benefit the Clinic, its clients, our school, and our students.” 🔗 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘: https://brnw.ch/21wNnTC #lawschool #lawfaculty #lawaward #immigrationlaw #immigrationjustice #facultyachievement #VanessaMerton
