Ronnie Barker was a household name across Britain for many decades. “The Two Ronnies” ranked alongside “Morecambe and Wise” as one of the nation’s most-loved comedy shows! At a glance, one might think that a comedian needs to be mould-breaking to have a successful career. Perhaps they need to be willing to do and say things that no one else will! But this wasn’t the case with Ronnie Barker. In truth, although I never had the pleasure of measuring his problem-solving style, I suspect he had a highly adaptive approach to comedy (and life). Barker's writing style was, according to The Times, "based on precise scripts and perfect timing." He often played with language, using double-entendres to great effect. The four candles sketch (see below) involved carefully crafted wordplay, refining and adapting phrases that had existed for centuries! In another famous incident, Ronnie Barker annotated a copy of “A Book of Nonsense” by Edward Lear, trying to improve on each limerick by writing punch lines of his own. He also created ‘The Ministry for Mispronunciation of Words’, highlighting how very small changes in letter arrangement can create humorous new meanings. Making people laugh doesn’t always mean doing something unprecedented and controversial. It can also involve careful attention to detail, using frameworks that already exist, writing and then rewriting material, thoroughly checking it before it sees the light of day. Barker was also famous for wanting to control every element of the program production – from writing scripts through to popping up in the editing suite.  A systematic assessment of all the sketches was made before the final selection was decided upon (very different from the Monty Python method of ‘if it makes us laugh it’s in’, which meant, if they got the giggles, a very variable standard of sketch made it to screen!). So, despite what many people may believe, a successful comedian doesn’t always have to be ‘off-the-wall’ and a bit ‘hit-or-miss’ with the gags: they can be well-rehearsed, careful, consistent and reliable too.
