Congrats to our friend Rocket on his Ted Talk "Vermont: The Value of Hardship" for TEDx Hartland Hill's series, The Art of Living! What a refreshing take on the inherent BENEFITS of hardship: innovation, accountability, and cooperation - these are KEY qualities of Vermont living! Here at BRIC in Springfield, we're acutely and continuously aware of the myriad of challenges that rural life presents in the face of our community development efforts. If we're being honest, the list of obstacles and setbacks we encounter day to day often feels endless - like pushing a boulder up hill (both ways!) in the snow. Anyone boots on the ground doing this type of work knows it's not for the faint of heart, and in fact we often joke that you have to be a certain sort of glutton for punishment in order to ever actually make any progress. We know what we're doing is difficult, and that we're pushing against the odds with the things we're trying to accomplish - and somehow this awareness actually BOLSTERS our determination. The spirit of resilience and ingenuity is STRONG in Vermont. It's an inherent part of our identity. Whether it's snowstorms, early frosts, catastrophic flooding, workforce and housing shortages, food insecurity, busted leaking pipes - whatever the hurdle, Vermonters SHOW UP. We imagine possibilities, we work together, and we GET SHIT DONE. In spite of the challenges, there's nowhere we'd rather be! We believe in the power of our communities, we root for the underdog, and we WILL prevail. Thanks for the food for thought, Rocket! Board Spotlight - Samantha Krop Samantha Krop is a part of WakeUP’s newest board cohort. She has her BA from the University of Central Florida and a Masters degree in Education and Curriculum Development from University of Oregon. She brings environmental advocacy and coalition-building experience from her role as Neuse Riverkeeper and her previous experience as an environmental justice educator at the high school and university levels. We are so excited for her energy and advocacy and look forward to her leadership on our board! When you aren't working or volunteering, what do you enjoy doing? Enjoying time outdoors with my pup. We're typically found exploring forested trails or paddling on the river. I love poetry and creative writing, making pies and being active. Why is WakeUP's work important for the Triangle? As Wake County grows, responsible, green growth is a top priority. WakeUp promotes shared values like small area planning, affordable housing and transit districts that, when applied, create more livable, vibrant communities. What makes you most excited about being on WakeUP's board? The opportunity to work more closely with others who value responsible development, and to leverage our collective times and energy to promote the kind of Wake County we want to see. What are Wake County's biggest opportunities/advantages when it comes to growth? Opportunities are around promoting density and infill growth while opposing gentrification and shortsighted sprawl. What ways do you hope to inspire Wake County residents to be engaged in our future? I hope to inspire folks to become more engaged in city planning and rezoning proposals--to track land use changes and engage in civic opportunities where it affects them! What does a typical weekend look like for you? Meet the Dallas Parks Coalition, a dynamic alliance united to support ALL Dallas Parks. Dallas Parks Coalition advocates for parks and green space project funding within the 2024 Bond Package to be approved by Dallas City Council and Dallas voters. To support the inclusion and passage of a parks-supportive 2024 Bond Package, the Dallas Parks Coalition will: 👉 Amplify and support the Dallas City Council, Community Bond Task Force and staff efforts to promote Dallas parks, trails and green spaces. 👉 Educate the public and elected officials about how parks, trails and open spaces create healthier communities that support economic growth and environmental integrity with a strong return on investment.
