Hawaiʻi County Mayor Mitch Roth joined Spotlight Now and shared how the County of Hawaiʻi has become the first county to incorporate the Rediscovering Hawaiʻi’s Soul framework in its programs. By collaborating with Kamehameha Schools and other thought leaders, they are working on projects to ensure that future generations of Native Hawaiians can continue to call Hawaiʻi Home. We love seeing these living examples of RHS in action! 💡 https://lnkd.in/gyvfy9MG #RediscoveringHawaiisSoul #HawaiisSoul #Hawaii

CBS Evening News with Norah O'Donnell returned to Paradise, California, to speak to returning residents and those who have chosen other paths. Jonathan Vigliotti revisited the Camp Fire nearly six years later and examined the effects of climate resiliency and refugees. Our CEO Jennifer Gray Thompson, MPA is part of this report -- talking about a favorite subject: Supporting the resiliency of people who live in naturally occurring affordable housing in rural and frontier America. While we do not support approving massive subdivisions in the WUI, we do support building the resiliency of those who already reside there and have built a community. The Town of Paradise deserves ongoing attention and we applaud the return of national media attention. We love working with and for the people of Paradise, including leaders like Councilman Steve Crowder, Superintendent of Achieve Charter Schools Casey Taylor, and Rep. Doug LaMalfa, and orgs like Rebuild Paradise Foundation. At After the Fire USA, we believe in running towards the fire, not running from the risk. We believe in solving the crisis of megafire, not shaming those most vulnerable. Climate Refugeeism is a real thing, and we will hear more and more about it. We will also push for more Climate-Resilient Housing that allows us to withstand the perils of climate change and engage in land restoration. Part Two of this report is in the comments. #paradise #campfire #afterthefire #afterthefireusa #megafire #climate https://lnkd.in/ggCmitKZ

My thoughts with my friends and people of the Caribbean who are facing the devastating impact of the recent hurricane. Whilst hurricanes are nothing new, it seems climate changes are making them more frequent and forceful. We, in the financial and technology sectors, must do more to mobilise capital to reverse climate change. Carbon sequestration projects need to scale extremely quickly otherwise our collective future is bleak. In parallel, we will need to fund greater short term protection to improve resilience in places like Carriacou. This requires some ecosystem design thinking.
Most communications are still down on Carriacou and we haven’t yet heard from our dear friends. But this video shows the indomitable spirit of a people who would have been historically disadvantaged yet already smile in the face of disaster. Completely humbling. Here’s to rebuilding and building economies and infrastructure to match the resilience of these beautiful people.

A great summary by Northwest Straits Foundation on King Tides, how they interact with shoreline structures and why a natural shoreline could be a better option. https://lnkd.in/gkKnf4ms
Northwest Straits Foundation on Instagram: "It's that time of year again - when king tides demonstrate their power across our shorelines! King tides can increase shoreline erosion and coastal flooding, it's important to understand these events and how to best mitigate damage while maintaining the shoreline's natural processes. To Hell with Hurricane Helene As a former #emergencyresponder, I am accustomed to a brittle operating environment; balance can only occur with resources. As the death toll rises, communities in FEMA Region 4 need more resources. For those of us who are not part of organizations in the fight to save lives, We can donate! I am endorsing Samaritan's Purse. Families and people trying to contact loved ones can call 2-1-1 or visit unitedwaync.org to fill out a request form to add them to search and rescue efforts. For those impacted, an application for assistance can be made through disasterassistance.gov or 1-800-621-3362. The experience of Hurricane Helene changed so many communities because who would have ever thought a tropical storm could impact an inland mountain region? We all need to realize that while nature brings chaos and destruction, our collective strength lies in connections with one another. The importance of relationships, empathy, and collaboration highlights the fragility of our environment. As communities continue to weather the storm and upcoming storms that follow, let us embrace the philosophy that balance is vital to resilience. Hurricane Helene is more than just a storm; it catalyzes change, resilience, and unity. Let's unify a mindset to “love thy neighbor” and emerge stronger. We learn that amidst the chaos, we find strength in each other, and in that strength, we discover our true capacity as humans to weather any storm. I hope for the safety of all of our communities and emergency responders. Thank you all for your energy and tireless, selfless service.
