Home education and exams: I often get this question from parents considering homeschooling: Does my child need to take exams if I home-educate? These are some key insights on home education and exams: -Legal Requirements: In the UK, home-educated children aren't legally required to take formal exams like GCSEs or A-Levels. However, these qualifications can be essential for higher education or career paths and are normally taken by 14 to 16-year-olds, but are available to anyone of any age. -Exam Choices: You can choose which exams your child takes, tailoring their education to their strengths and interests. This could include IGCSEs, which are popular among home educators. -Exam Centres: Home-educated students can take exams at registered exam centres. Planning is crucial, as you'll need to register and pay fees independently. -Alternative Qualifications: Consider other qualifications like Functional Skills, BTECs, or online courses. These can offer practical skills and alternative routes to further education or employment. -University Admissions: Many UK universities accept a range of qualifications, not just A-Levels. Home-educated students often demonstrate the self-discipline and independent learning skills that universities value. -Flexibility: Home education offers the flexibility to schedule exams over a more extended period, reducing pressure on your child. Deciding on exams is a key part of your child's home education journey in the UK. It's about finding the right path that aligns with their aspirations and learning styles. Year 6 SATs exams mark a milestone in our children’s academic journey, showcasing the knowledge and skills they've absorbed throughout primary school. It's a celebration of their growth and achievements in the primary phase. While it's natural for children to feel some pressure, let's remind them that SATs are just one aspect of their journey, not a measure of their worth. These exams test reading, writing, and maths proficiency, but they don't assess the essence of our children, their empathy, kindness, character, and self-belief. Let's ensure children understand that their value goes far beyond their performance in standardised tests. Most importantly, let's not let SATs overshadow the joy of reading for fun. Education is about nurturing a love for learning, and no exam should dampen that spirit. And finally, acknowledgment for all teachers and staff across schools who work tirelessly and selflessly to help children grow and create an environment where every child can flourish. Exam time is stressful for both children and staff alike, and their dedication doesn't go unnoticed. Good luck to everyone! 🙏 #NottinghamSchools #Education #SATs

Last night I got into a discussion around what constitutes early years! A definition I had not really thought too much about, nor had I thought far into the implication of how we should treat learners in an early years setting. The Queensland Government defines early years as Prep to year 2 while the PYP early years program runs from 3 years old to 6 years old (Kindy to Year 1 in the Aussie system). But why does it matter? I believe you would struggle to find a kindergarten across Asia that doesn't provide a play-based structure the results of which are widely championed. But what happens as we come into the older range of early years students. At what age should students transition from a play space to a more traditional learning environment? In my travels the biggest gap I still see is during this transition period, where schools look to bring in a structure that starts to build towards the teacher led traditional learning practices. But what of the student agency, are we conditioning students too young to lose control over how they interact with their learning and learning environments? For many young learnings the journey goes from the freedom of Kindergarten & Prep to the rigid structure of year 1 and 2. Schools need to embrace the early years and make sure to solidify the benefits of large group learning. Build in trust for the 6-8 year old students that they can take ownership over their learning space, by creating learning environments that are open and collaborative. Don't be afraid to delay the shift to desks for all, create shared spaces that give learners and educators a variable shared environment to explore and experiment how they learn and teach.

When you are considering private schools, think beyond the tuition if you're amongst the middle class... [1] 10-15% additional costs for uniforms and school supplies. [2] Extracurricular activities that could easily double your spend. [3] The unseen expenses of peer pressure and social events. [4] The time cost of being involved in the school community. [5] The toll on your sanity as you balance work and school commitments. When choosing an education path, evaluate not just the sticker price but the holistic investment. A public school might be lighter on the pocket, leaving room for other enriching experiences for your child. After all, true education goes beyond the classroom.
