🌟 Embracing the Power of Giving 🌟 In the journey of life and leadership, the choices we make define not only our success but also our legacy. Adam Grant's illuminating book, "Give and Take," sheds light on the dynamics of interpersonal interactions, distinguishing between givers, takers, and matchers, and how these orientations shape our paths to success. Givers, driven by a genuine desire to contribute and help others, often face initial struggles but ultimately emerge as some of the most successful and fulfilled individuals. Research indicates that givers create opportunities for themselves and others, fostering a culture of reciprocity that leads to long-term success. One shining example of a giver's transformative impact is none other than Mr. Abraham Lincoln, Former US President. During his remarkable journey to the presidency, Lincoln demonstrated unparalleled selflessness and generosity. A poignant example is his Senate campaign against Lyman Trumbull, where despite securing 44% of the votes, Lincoln gracefully stepped back to support Trumbull, recognising the loyalty of Trumbull's supporters and the alignment of their ideologies. Lincoln's decision to prioritise the greater good over personal gain epitomizes the essence of giving. By putting aside his own ambitions and rallying his supporters behind Trumbull, Lincoln earned immense goodwill and respect, laying the foundation for his historic presidency. Throughout history, leaders like Lincoln have exemplified the transformative power of giving, reminding us that success isn't just about individual achievement but also about making a meaningful impact on others and society as a whole. By embracing generosity, empathy, and selflessness, we can forge deeper connections, drive positive change, and leave a lasting legacy that transcends personal success. Speaking to Groups that SPARKLE make my day! I had the honor of being the Keynote Speaker for the Awards Dinner for SUNY Adirondack TRIO SSS (Student Support Services), and what I continue to learn about growth-focused work cultures whether corporate, academic, non-profit, start-up is three things that are always present: 1) Celebrating People and Team's SuperPowers where they are right now. 2) Creating an infrastructure to support their development not just professionally but also personally. 3) Noticing their wins and challenges and putting structures in place to keep the momentum going. Bonus: Create a fun vibe to do all three! One of the things I love about working with groups and individuals is that I learn so much about people and what environments allow us to thrive. To me, it comes down to three things; clarity, support, and accountability! When you do all three your teams will want to stick around and thrive! As I sit here on this snowy MLK day, reflecting, I find inspiration in Martin Luther King Jr.'s words: “We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there ‘is’ such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.” Driven by my definition of #community, I realized my passion for serving remains unwavering. Reflecting on 2023, it was a year of highs and lows, with losses and global challenges that forced us to look for the deeper meaning of things and reminded us to make sure we are focusing on things that are most important. Cowan Consulting witnessed significant growth and collaboration in our third year of operation. Committed to our motto "Your need. Our solution," we provided effective solutions to numerous clients. Partnering with the e2grow team allowed us to deliver scalable #leadership and #team development solutions around #HighPerformance and building effective teams while still being able to provide strengths development workshops and custom solutions for other clients.   Our collaboration with Mississippi Power continued into 2024, marking our third year of providing leadership training to college students as a part of their Uplift Program. We also facilitated strategic training and business development sessions for new clients who were seeing a substantial amount of growth and wanted to make sure they had a plan for moving forward. We are extremely grateful for our partners & clients!   On a personal and professional note, this year marked my third year as a full-time entrepreneur. Investing in business and prioritizing professional growth expanded our capabilities and connected us to a global community. Attending Gallup's At Work Summit extended my network and served as a source of inspiration.   Beyond Cowan Consulting, my involvement in 2023 extended to coaching a girls' basketball team, teaching Computer Science at Rhodes College, and contributing to various community projects. Highlights included raising money for a charity event, serving on the city's zoning board, organizing a local back to school supply drive, creating a video honoring the history of one of the all black schools in Mississippi, learning tennis and playing more basketball. In 2024, I anticipate more growth, connections, travel, opportunities, and celebrations. This year is will be a year of intentionality. I joined my first Advisory Board ~10 years ago when I started advising San Jose State University where I earned my MBA - go Spartans! Since then I've joined and stepped off different Advisory Boards at various non-profits and start ups. It's brought interesting experiences, much joy and lots of new friends.
