Details at the Warburg Institute. The Warburg Renaissance project honours both architect Charles Holden and founder Aby Warburg, while opening its unique contents up to new audiences. A key challenge was balancing modernisation with the preservation of the Institute's distinctive character and atmosphere. Fluted timber columns, woodblock and terrazzo floors and glazed screens typical of Holden’s style were retained wherever possible and continued through the details and finishes of the new interiors. Library stacks were reoriented to their original position, improving natural light and increasing capacity for 20 years future growth, and facilitated full reinstatement of Warburg’s unique cataloguing system. Warburg’s academic philosophy and approach were referenced throughout. The new lecture theatre features a sculptural ellipse echoing the Hamburg roof light. This organic shape is set within a regular grid of fair faced concrete beams and columns referencing the expressed structure present in many of Holden’s other projects. 01.
