When you have conviction for *both* who you are now and what you could do ahead, the rest takes care of itself. Lindsey Naber was the first teammate I was able to hire in my marketing career. I was working at Rawlings Sporting Goods in St Louis, and we were a small but passionate team. Our opportunity was to help a new generation feel the same passion for our product that we felt. And in the first conversation Lindsey and I had together, it was evident that she embodied this deeply. Many people have and share passion for what something is, today. (I love this company, I love this industry, or I love sports). Not many people also have and share passion for what something could be, tomorrow. (I want more people to feel what I feel, or I see so much more that we can do together). Lindsey brought both - not just in that first conversation but through her career journey that has followed since . She not only lifts up her team at Rawlings, but she actively teaches to help bring fresh voices into sports. For me, as a coach helping to guide a teammate like Lindsey, I learned the power of having a teammate who saw our potential in different ways than I did. That challenged me to think more broadly, to ask more questions, and to create more spaces for my teams to push forward. For those out there reading, or those out there embarking on or resetting your career, channel your inner Lindsey. Who do you believe in today…. As a solopreneur, I'm excited about growing my business, but I often think back to my time as a leader in my previous role. Leading and developing a team was incredibly fulfilling, and I aim to bring that same energy and passion to TAP for Hire. Creating the right culture is paramount. I have reported to two founder/CEO's across 3 companies in my career and what I've found is that what they value about my work is not some innate talent but a willingness to spend time on and off the clock assessing organizational needs and devouring info and content about what other, usually larger organizations, are doing to address similar needs and then attempt to bring those capabilities to our organization. A little less than 2 years ago a store manager on my team lost her battle to cancer. Jenn was a ray of sunshine to all those who knew her. ☀️ Yesterday I was doing an interview for a different district team. During the interview it came out that this candidate many years ago was hired by Jenn. She shared how way back then as she applied for a seasonal sales associate Jenn made her feel so special. The candidate shared how Jenn as her leader said words like “I see something special in you” “you have so much potential” those words made a lasting impression on her. This candidate said how she thought of those words and how Jenn made her feel. Hoping Jenn would be proud as she is now years later interviewing for a Store Manager position. This was such a beautiful moment and I was so grateful that this candidate shared this with me. This moment has made me pause and reflect on how….every day we are leaving our legacy with those we lead and interact with. 💙 There is power in how we use our words. 💙 There is power in how we invest in people. 💙 There is power in being kind. 💙 There is also power in how clear we are as we coach people to reach their potential 💗We have a opportunity every day to make a difference in someone’s life. I am grateful for the opportunities l've had and the great people l've met along this journey. Recently, I spent time in Houston for a consultative selling course and learned valuable skills to assist my community and build partnerships across the Lowe's enterprise. (Thank you Dawn for the word) Here are a few key takeaways: 🔑Always prepare, no matter the length of the interaction. 🔑Embrace vulnerability and use it as an opportunity to grow. 🔑Be resilient, a "no" may just be a "not now," so ask for feedback and learn from it. 🔑Don't be afraid to ask close-ended questions. As someone who comes from a Leo background, this was a difficult one for me, but it can lead to great success. Your next CEO could be a current employee. Pano Christou started off as a store manager at Pret, 19 years and 10 promotions later, he became CEO. Here's what every employer can learn from his story: 1/ Pay attention to everyone. Christou never dreamed of running the company, he took the job to make a living and did his best at whatever task he had in front of him. Not everyone who comes through your company will look like a future CEO right away. Empower and pay attention to everyone - no matter their role, experience, or education. 2/ Build relationships with your people Christou believes that people feed off the support of their direct manager. He felt that his managers saw and appreciated the value that he added, and that encouraged him to stay all those years in the face of other opportunities. Want your best people to stay? Support your leaders in supporting their people. 3/ Create a company people want to grow their lives with His advice to young 'job-hoppers' was to find a company they find satisfaction in, and feel like they can grow 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵. He follows with, "but if you're not enjoying it and the business appears to be stagnating, "maybe it's time to go and do something different." Leadership Tip: Welcome to Sunday! I want to take a moment to discuss the concept of defining your self-worth by your career. Many do it. LinkedIn is full of people gauging their self-worth by their next great career connection and their ability to name-drop their latest contact. However, recently, I have seen another round of people posting about the gut-wrenching shock of going from the emotional high of working with a big-name company to being dropped to an emotional low of going through a layoff. Now I am not diminishing at all the harsh pain of losing your employment...it can be almost like grieving the loss of a loved one. But please, please don't view this event as a black mark on your self-worth. This is more about the worth of a company than anything else. Job or no job, your self-worth doesn't need to diminish. Your value isn't defined by a job or a company. You are much more valuable than that, and I hope and pray that others see how wonderfully you were designed! #leadership #intrinsicleadership
