In 2018 MLA's Hire an Esquire sat down with James to interview him about the way he was bringing Fennemore into the future (we have an amazing full interview I'll have to share separately). He had just stepped into the role of managing partner and generously shared so much wisdom with us about how to build and grow a modern law firm. One great quote from our interview with James: "Stop doing what every other law firm is doing! If every other law firm is doing what you are, that's a good indicator of what you should not be doing. There’s a sea of similar firms in the legal industry, and they all tend to look the same. So there’s a huge opportunity, much more than other industries, for law firms to stand out. You have to be willing to take a little bit of a risk deviating from the norm." Obviously, those risks paid off and today Fennemore is celebrating their (ever-rising) ranking in the AmLaw 200. Congratulations!
When I started at Fennemore, we had 3 offices. Today, it’s 18—a 500% increase. Our rise as one of the largest law firms in the U.S. is similarly rocketing up. I’m proud to share that Fennemore rose five spots to #186 in the 2024 Am Law 200 rankings of the largest law firms in the U.S. based on gross revenue. Thank you to the amazing people at Fennemore who make this success possible. We’re on one heck of a ride together at Fennemore, and I feel lucky to be part of it with all of the firm’s amazing people.

🚀 Recent Moves in the Legal World! Spencer Fane has deepened its reach in the Las Vegas market by bringing on 14 talented lawyers from the esteemed local firm, Holley Driggs. This strategic combination strengthens Spencer Fane’s presence in the region, expanding its Las Vegas office to a team of 35 lawyers. For the Holley Driggs team, this move means joining a national network of colleagues, while for Spencer Fane, it enhances client services in the US Southwest. This follows the firm’s recent expansions in Utah and New Mexico, highlighting their commitment to growth in key markets. The legal industry has seen a wave of westward expansions this year, with several big law firms merging to enhance their market footprint. We’re excited to see what’s next! 💼🌟 #LegalIndustry #LawFirmGrowth #LasVegasLegal #SpencerFane #LawFirmExpansion

Philadelphia's legal market is sending some mixed signals: Large national law firms are expanding in, and firms with homegrown roots are expanding outward. What's going on in the local market? Well, we're still feeling the after-effects of the pandemic, for a start. Read the deeper analysis here:
Troutman Pepper and Ballard Spahr LLP are growing outside of Philadelphia. They're not the first Philadelphia stalwarts to embrace growth outside of their home region. So what does all of this suggest for the Philadelphia legal market as a whole? To find out more, reporter Amanda O'Brien spoke with Mantra Legal Consulting founder Marci Taylor, Cozen O'Connor executive chairman and CEO Michael Heller, Ballard Spahr chairman Peter Michaud and Troutman Pepper chairman Tom Cole. I enjoyed discussing #lawfirmmergerstrategy with Amanda O'Brien as part of her reporting on recent large firm combinations. Law firm #strategicplanning has been very active this year, and the growth imperative is alive and well. What your firm's strategy entails can vary widely based on client needs and, in particular, the business climate and growth opportunities in your current geographic markets. How is your firm planning its #growthstrategy for 2025 and beyond?
