🗞️Asylum seekers have been unlawfully detained in EU-funded facilities on the Greek island of Samos. Now, we run the risk of turning Samos into a blueprint for how the EU 'manages' its borders, which isn't too good. This week's EU Affairs newsletter explains what Samos means for the EU, how Russian espionage is back on the agenda, and how the ongoing investigation into X is taking shape. 👀Russian spies have been busy over the past 2 years, and a new immigration law for Russian and Belarusian citizens might not help to mitigate that. It was great to chat with Hazar Deniz Eker about the significant role of using artwork and creating a space for the voices of people on the move to guide our research on Europe's migration facilities. In Amnesty International's latest report, published last week, artwork created during our workshops at our sites showcased the inhumane conditions in the Samos Closed-Controlled Access Centre from the residents' perspective. The centre is supposed to be the blueprint for new reception and pre-deportation centers in Europe. The severe issues of overcrowding, lacking water services, lacking sanitation facilities, lacking medical care, and prison-like structures exacerbate already vulnerable communities and place people seeking protection in detention-like conditions. This cannot be the future of the EU.

Good news for a change
Germany introduces new law requiring new citizens to recognize the existence of Israel. 🇩🇪🤝🇮🇱 The new citizenship requirements will feature “New test questions… on the topics of antisemitism, the right of the state of Israel to exist and Jewish life in Germany.” Interior Minister Nancy Fraser has said: “Anyone who shares our values and makes an effort can now get a German passport more quickly and no longer has to give up part of their identity by giving up their old nationality.” “But we have also made it just as clear: anyone who does not share our values cannot get a German passport. We have drawn a crystal-clear red line here and made the law much stricter than before.” Source: Financial Times Oli London @OliLondon

What’s a human rights lawyer doing writing about international #trade and #connectivity you might ask? Well, when it can also be a vector for peace, it makes total sense. Here’s my take for the Atlantic Council on how #Armenia’s “Crossroads For Peace” initiative can economically benefit the region, reduce Armenia’s reliance on #Russia, and promote peace throughout the #SouthCaucasus
How Armenia’s ‘Crossroads for Peace’ plan could transform the South Caucasus

I'm not sure how I came across Unbias The News and Gabriela Ramírez but I'm really glad I did. Their reporting on the deaths at Europe's border, in particular the Border Graves Investigation, is some of the best journalism I've seen on this matter. Critical, probing, and human - the kind of approach I take in my own research and writing. I wish we had more of this kind of reporting. For anyone interested, check out the nice explainer video below.
What happens when life ends at Europe's borders? How are these people’s lives marked? How can their families honor them? How do governments recognize their existence and their fundamental rights as human beings? More than 29,000 people have died on European migration routes in the last decade, most of whose names remain unknown. Here is an explainer on the award-winning cross-border investigation #BorderGraves by our own Gabriela Ramírez, who is one of the journalists part of the Border Graves Investigation team collaborating to uncover this disturbing reality across Europe. Dive deep into this investigation on our website, where we published five deeply human-centered stories for each region covered: https://lnkd.in/eJ35QHBP The Border Graves Team: Tina Xu Danai Maragoudaki Daphne Tolis Leah Pattem Eoghan Gilmartin Gabriele Cruciata Barbara Matejcic and Gabriela Ramírez In collaboration with reporters from The Guardian and Süddeutsche Zeitung Unbias The News Team: Christina Lee (Editor in Chief) Gabriela Ramírez (Multimedia Editor) and antoine bouraly (Illustrator) . #migration #journalism #europe #bordergraves #migrants #europe #refugees #asylumseekers #eu #elections Hostwriter

Thank you for meeting with us, Deniz; it was great chatting about the value of art in guiding research on conditions of detention and reception centers for people on the move. The voices of the people affected should always come first!
