National Recovery Month is a national observance held every September to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life. Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery, just as we celebrate health improvements made by those who are managing other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease. This observance reinforces the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.   There are millions of Americans whose lives have been transformed through recovery. Since these successes often go unnoticed by the broader population, Recovery Month provides a vehicle for everyone to celebrate these accomplishments. Each September, tens of thousands of prevention, treatment, and recovery programs and facilities around the country celebrate Recovery Month. They speak about strides made by those in recovery and share their success stories with their neighbors, friends, and colleagues. ICYMI - Terrific article By E Fuller Torrey, M.D. about the bipartisan push to open sufficient psychiatric beds to adequately care for individuals who may require several weeks of hospitalization, sufficient time for trials of clozapine, the most effective antipsychotic, as well as long-acting injectable antipsychotics. He writes, "Stabilization ultimately requires more than just medication; Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams and Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) for those who are unaware of their own illness are also needed, as well as attention to housing and rehabilitation, such as is available in the clubhouse (Fountain House) model. But stabilization in a hospital is the first requirement." Mauni CSR and CSI For years, professionals in the substance use disorder and psychiatric fields have been emphasizing the deep connection between trauma and mental health challenges. While it's easy to feel like we've been 'banging on' about trauma for ages, the more we understand its role, the better we can shape our approaches to treatment. But first, where does the trauma come from? In countries like South Africa, where institutional structures continue to create stressed environments and communities—combined with high unemployment—these factors only add to the problem. The trauma we see isn't just personal—it’s systemic. At Mauni, in my role as CSR and CSI executive, we’ve implemented initiatives that go beyond addressing trauma alone. By combining the biopsychosocial model with existing communities, and shifting from a siloed approach to a more community-based one, we are achieving much better results. Our work in the UK with recovery cities in Middlesbrough and Recovery Connections is clear evidence of this success.
