Organizations often perpetuate harmful narratives that disproportionately disadvantage women. Led by John Hopkins University, this workshop, facilitated by Dr. Anna Kalbarczyk, DrPH, MPH, Dr. Rosemary Morgan, PhD, Dr. Mehr Manzoor, Dr. Choolwe Nkwemu Jacobs and Meagan Harrison, will address harmful narratives in leadership by encouraging participants to consider alternative approaches for their own leadership styles and offering strategies to dismantle oppressive systems within their organizations. My yesterday's reflections on #reimaginingleadership2024 from #WLHGC2024 ,"Why women need a tribe". All summarised in the below link. If you are into leadership and you are a woman, it is worth to consider having a tribe, or a circle of support from other women. Being at the top, especially in leadership positions, can be lonely and sometimes all you need is a group of women who have made it to the top and those who understand the dynamics of being in the leadership and can offer mentorship support. My take aways from yesterday's leadership session on transformative leadership was ACTION, ACTION, ACTION from the panellists. A -Action C -Commitment (What Commitment are you making as a leader?) T -Transformation (Transform our mind and on what we do). I -Innovation O -Opportunity (Always look out for opportunities) N -Network #reimaginingleadership #WLHGC2014 WomenLift Health https://lnkd.in/dV_SyfWx

I was researching some articles on Women and Leadership & was pleasantly interested with this factoid: "When there is one woman on a board, progress is difficult. But when three or more women are on a board, dynamics shift." The 2006 study by Harvard Business Review, further said, "At that critical mass, women tend to be regarded by other board members not as ‘female directors’ but simply as directors, and they don’t report being isolated or ignored." At any stage of growth & leadership, especially where the trajectory works on #DiversityAndInclusion it is important to establish belonging at the table along with the seats at the table. Understanding the dynamics of a token addition to the board does very little if the environment isn't conducive to easily and effortlessly create space for #belongingness. It is not about permission. It is neither about the position. It is, however, about creating the critical mass - a number game, that shifts a homogenous way of thinking & perspective, to a more multi-faceted and broader view that represents a wider segment of stakeholders. What are your thoughts on this? Meanwhile, let's take a moment to tag & celebrate the #women we may know who serve on Boards of Directors for being the trailblazers they are! There is endless fascination with a) the differences in behavior with respect to power between men and women and b) how this all plays out in explaining women's ascendance to leadership positions and what they should do to be more successful in their quest for powerful roles. This article argues that, contrary to the idea that women should conform to gender-role expectations and exhibit less agentic, powerful behavior, women who are more assertive in leader roles are perceived more positively. Meanwhile, there is an enormous--and often contradictory--literature on women's patterns of speech. This classic meta-analysis of numerous studies (https://lnkd.in/gE5D_Azi) finds that women are slightly more likely than men to use tentative language and patterns of speech, which the authors interpret as showing greater interpersonal sensitivity. While some people argue that the bases of power and stereotypes about what leaders should act like should change, there is little evidence that they have, for either women or men (https://lnkd.in/gP9W76kn). In the meantime, the existing evidence in psychology and politics suggests that women increasingly are, and should be, eschewing social expectations and acting with power. Precisely the message of 7 Rules of Power. #power #gender #women #language #socialexpectations https://lnkd.in/gvg6Dk9j

Excerpt: "Women leaders deal with getting blindsided at work far more than is typically acknowledged. I know I certainly did. I experienced aggressive questioning and laughter at my ideas. I was talked over and interrupted countless times. I was thrown under the bus and had my ideas stolen right after they came out of my mouth. I had leadership shout in my face and experienced subtle microaggressions in private and public. Getting blindsided can happen within the hidden crevices of insidious microaggressions, or it can occur blatantly and with an audience, like being skewered in a meeting. No matter how it happens, it sucks to get blindsided at work. It triggers emotions like defensiveness, embarrassment, or foolishness, which stop us from thinking clearly and responding powerfully. And unfortunately, it happens more often to women than to men. As a coach who works primarily with women in leadership, I've heard stories from my clients about presenting in boardrooms where their ideas our outright attacked. They've been told 'Your delivery sucks' or 'That's not for you to know,' even though they hold executive and C-level roles. It's disorienting, confusing, and incredibly hurtful, not to mention a professional outrage."
