What it takes to be a successful president of an HBCU has evolved, especially in the wake of a pandemic and enrollment pressures. The School of Education Executive Leadership Institute at Clark Atlanta University works with select leaders and supports hires after they take the helm to prepare leaders of historically Black schools for the complexities of running their institutions. Our HBCU Executive Leadership Institute will address the following four components: > Well-defined competency model (knowledge, skills, and dispositions) for effective HBCU leadership. > A high-quality performance-based preparation program that engages participants in a combination of face-to-face and online learning experiences. > A well-defined approach for recruitment of potential participants that includes selection criteria and protocols. > A model for ongoing evaluation and support of aspiring and practicing HBCU leaders.

During the 2017-2018 academic year, the Network launched its first Middle Leadership Academy to support nine #CSU campus teams in implementing Executive Order (EO) 1110, which required the elimination of remedial English and mathematics courses. Our recent report highlights how campus teams utilized the Academy to plan and execute their responses to EO 1110 in math, explores the Academy's capacity for fostering equitable change within the CSU, and suggests that year-long leadership academies involving faculty, staff, and administrators can enhance the implementation of new policies mandated by the CSU Chancellor’s Office or campus leadership. On July 8, your Collegiate DECA Executive Officers (Eric Bedrosian, Sophia Smith, James Jeffrey Rogers, and myself) hosted the first virtual Collegiate Town Hall. The purpose of this call was to bring new and returning Collegiate DECA members in a discussion environment in hopes to share feedback and suggestions to help each other have a successful year. For those who weren’t able to attend, here is what was discussed.   After we had everyone introduce themselves, the first discussion was on Collegiate DECA Knowledge where members asked questions about Collegiate DECA. This included aspects on how the high school division is different from the collegiate division as Collegiate DECA members take on more independent tasks compared to high school members. The second topic was about Leadership Strategies as members discussed on what recommended officer positions chapters should have. Because officers hold a large responsibility for tasks, each chapter can be flexible on how many positions are needed to function. It was also mentioned how connecting with local businesses can start from your own connections and being involved in local events to network with small businesses.   The last two topics were feedback for the collegiate division as well as how can we, as executive officers, assist our members in a more effective way. Members expressed that having more calls similar to the town hall can be beneficial as it allows those to understand Collegiate division more. On top of that, additional tips on how to fundraise can help chapters host even better events as well as bring more members to conferences like the ENGAGE conference and Collegiate ICDC.   A special thanks to all the members who attended our town hall last week. Later this week, we will release the future Collegiate Calls list for the upcoming year so more of our members can learn and grow together.
