If you are a new nurse graduate…if you are a more experienced nurse…we are in this together… Starting your nursing career is an exciting adventure filled with new challenges and opportunities. But it's natural to feel a little overwhelmed…or very overwhelmed! Wouldn't it be amazing to have a peek into the future and learn from those who've paved the way? Wouldn't it be amazing to have a true mentorship - dare I say apprentice-ship model in place for all new nurse graduates? While that is a wonderful and helpful notion, it is not offered in many workplaces, given the context of the pressure-like environments. Years ago, I heard a term that described children being born 'cable ready' - they are born with this innate sense of embracing technology. For the most part, this is the expectation of new grads - they are expected to appear 'cable ready' for clinical practice. While it is realistic to expect new grads to have met the entry standards, I think sometimes there are unrealistic expectations placed on them and the apprenticeship model that is so sadly missing now in clinical practice to support them. New grads: What are those burning questions in your mind as you start your first set of shifts? This International Nurses Day, let's shine a well-deserved spotlight on the heroes of healthcare—the nurses who tirelessly dedicate themselves to the well-being of others. Did you know that despite the critical demand for RNs and APRNs, nursing school enrollment isn't keeping pace? Enrollment in entry-level baccalaureate programs has increased, but drops in PhD and master's nursing programs are raising concerns about meeting future nursing service demands. A shortage of nursing school faculty compounds the issue. In 2021, over 91,000 qualified applications were turned away due to insufficient faculty and resources. Additionally, a significant portion of the nursing workforce is nearing retirement age, signaling a potential crisis in the years ahead. At Maryland Apprenticeship Connector (MAC), we're working to help individuals entering the nursing industry through apprenticeship programs. Let's recognize the dedication, resilience, and compassion of the nurses that have decided to choose this career path. They are the heart of healthcare, and their unwavering commitment deserves our deepest gratitude.

🌟 Why Choose Nursing? Reflecting Ahead of Nurses Week 🌟 Over the past few weeks, I've had the profound privilege of speaking with several BSc. Nurses as they awaited their internship postings. Our conversations have been eye-opening, illuminating both the passion that drives individuals to this noble profession and the stark challenges they face. In 2020, amidst the global crisis, the world stood together, clapping for our healthcare heroes. Fast forward to 2024, and sadly, the enthusiasm seems to have dimmed, with government budget allocations falling short of supporting nurse interns. Despite this, every nurse I spoke with carried a spark—an unwavering commitment to care that transcends the hurdles of poor remuneration, professional degradation, and a lack of governmental appreciation. As Nurses Week approaches this May, it's crucial to remember why so many choose this path: Impact - Nurses make a life-saving impact daily, providing care that extends beyond just medical needs. Resilience - Facing systemic challenges, nurses continually advocate for their patients and their profession. Compassion - At the heart of nursing is a profound compassion for human life and well-being. Choosing nursing isn't just a career decision; it's a call to make a difference, even when it’s hard. Let's use Nurses Week to not only celebrate nurses but to rekindle the support they deserve. In state legislatures and healthcare forums nationwide, the nursing workforce crisis is a pressing topic. The National Nursing Workforce Survey by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) underscores the urgency, revealing startling figures: 👉 The healthcare system saw about 100,000 RNs and 34,000 LPNs/LVNs exit during the pandemic. 👉 Predictions indicate a potential departure of 800,000 RNs and 184,000 LPNs/LVNs by 2027. 👉 Younger, early-career nurses, making up 24% of the RN workforce, are at a higher risk of leaving due to burnout and stress. This data not only highlights the scale of the crisis but also the critical need for strategic actions. It's time for industry professionals and policymakers to unite, focusing on nurturing early-career nurses and preventing the mass exodus fueled by stress and burnout. 𝐀 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡? ***** UPDATE ***** I am about to start a new placement, 7 weeks as a 2nd year student nurse! I was initially concerned that my placements have mostly been care home like, however, each one i have been to has been slightly different with varying responsibilities, patient needs and risks including this one! While on my first day back to work at the Grit Academy, I happened to look out the window and saw this beautiful Manila skyline, which reminded me that as a nurse, the sky is the limit in terms of opportunities for professional growth in nursing. As someone who was once a new nurse, I understand the challenges that come with entering the healthcare field.
