As a Neonatologist I spend a lot of money, often unwillingly and unnecessary with 25% of days an infant in the NICU not even receiving ICU level care ❗ So why is this happening? ⁉ Because we have no other care delivery offering for infant care delivery besides the most costly and invasive setting. That is why we are creating Firstday Healthcare using technology to bring the care to the baby instead of the baby to us. As both a mother to premature infants and a NICU nurse educator, I understand the importance of family-centered care in the NICU. The journey through the NICU can be overwhelming, but empowering parents to be an active part of their baby’s care makes a world of difference. When families feel supported, outcomes improve—not just for the baby, but for the parents as well. My goal is to equip nurses with the tools and training they need to foster this connection. Trauma-informed, developmental care is at the heart of what I teach because it recognizes the vital role that families play in a baby’s recovery. A Baby Had No Home After a Stay in the NICU. Her Nurses Adopted Her. Nurses Taylor and Drew Deras doted on tiny and fragile baby Ella, one of their premature NICU patients who was born at 23 weeks, weighing just over a pound. Ella, who was born in May 2021, needed intensive medical care, including several blood transfusions. Whenever Taylor Deras had downtime during her shift, she would snuggle Ella and read to her.
