Our Board Practice, led by Tanya Gass, had the pleasure of sponsoring an enriching webinar today, focusing on the pivotal role of Non-Executive Directors in Asia. This event marked the beginning of the Transpire - Global Director Network series run by Tony Stubbs FCA, FRSA, aimed at delving into the nuances of NED responsibilities across different jurisdictions, and contrasting them with those in the UK.
Devyani P Vaishampayan, NED at Norman Broadbent chaired the discussion, and we heard expert insights from Govind Iyer, Hiroo Mirchandani and Mui Hoon POH, FSID FSCS, who shed light on various strategic aspects that aspiring NEDs in Asia should consider. Advice for professionals seeking to embark on or enhance their journey as a NED in the region included:
1. Networking 🤝: Engage with local networking opportunities, such as the regional Institute of Directors, to build connections and gain regional insights.
2. Collaboration with Headhunters 👥: Establish relationships with both international and local headhunters who specialise in board-level appointments.
3. LinkedIn Profile Optimisation 🌐: Revisit and refine your LinkedIn profile to emphasise your international experience and value proposition as a potential NED.
4. Knowledge Enhancement 📚: Stay informed about the regional governance landscape, understanding both the commonalities and distinctions in practices, such as tenure lengths, diversity goals, remuneration norms, and board committee operations.
5. Proactive Engagement 🎯: Identify and reach out to companies and international NEDs in Asia that align with your interests and expertise.
With over 2,000 board positions expected to open in India alone due to term expirations, the opportunities in Asia are vast and promising for the right candidates. Stay tuned for more from the Transpire GLOBAL series.
