As we approach the holiday season, it's crucial to reflect on the care and respect our elderly loved ones deserve, especially in care homes. Unfortunately, there are still instances where private care home owners prioritise profits over the well-being and dignity of the people they are meant to care for. Some choose luxury holidays over providing the high-quality environment and support that elderly residents truly need. XHAL.UK and Kuldeepuk Kohli are addressing this deeply concerning issue, focusing on ensuring that care homes offer the best treatment and respect for our elderly. This is not an attack on all care homes but a call for greater awareness and accountability. We urge care home owners to shift away from profit-driven motives and dedicate their resources to providing genuine care. Kuldeepuk Kohli, along with volunteers and Generative AI, is actively working without financial gain to tackle this long-term issue. This initiative is about raising awareness and reminding us all of our responsibility to ensure our elderly loved ones receive the care they deserve, particularly during a time when many are focused on celebrations and leisure. We will all grow older and one day require the care of others—let’s ensure it is there for us, with the respect and dignity we all deserve.

Leading with Purpose: A Reflection on Cultural Change and Progress Ten months ago, I stepped into the role of service manager at MercyCare Wembley with a clear goal: to foster a more person-centered approach to care. I knew it wouldn’t be easy. Changing the way a facility operates—particularly its culture—requires patience, commitment, and a willingness to navigate through challenges. However, I was determined to create an environment where every person we care for feels heard, respected, and supported in a way that honors their individual needs. The journey has not been without its difficulties. Culture is built over time, and shifting long-standing habits or mindsets takes work. There were moments of resistance, as is common when introducing change. Progress didn’t always come as quickly as I would have liked, and I found myself occasionally questioning if I was on the right path. Yet, through it all, I remained focused on the bigger picture—the people we serve and what they need from us. Our team began to adopt a more collaborative and compassionate approach. We worked on listening more closely to residents and involving them in decisions about their care. These small changes started to build momentum, and slowly, I could see the shift I had hoped for: a more engaged team and a clearer sense of purpose around delivering person-centered care. Recently, our hard work was recognized when Wembley was awarded “Home of the Year.” It was an unexpected honor, and while we were surprised, we felt a deep sense of gratitude. This recognition reinforced that we are making meaningful progress. It’s been a team effort, with everyone contributing to the positive changes we’ve seen. However, I also recognize that this is just one step on a longer journey. There’s still more to be done, and I am committed to continuing to improve our services. The award is a nice milestone, but the real focus remains on the work we do every day to ensure the best possible care for our residents. Looking ahead, I feel optimistic. We’ve come a long way in a short time, and while there are challenges ahead, I’m confident we’re moving in the right direction. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made, and I’m excited to keep pushing forward to build on what we’ve achieved.
