We are excited to announce that we have joined CODA - Centre of Decommissioning Australia as a partner. The Centre of Decommissioning Australia (CODA) was established as an independent organisation to support the development of a world-class decommissioning industry for Australia. We work with all stakeholders in the decommissioning community to evaluate and promote opportunities to: ● optimise the recycling and re-use of infrastructure; ● maximise opportunities for the local workforce, service & technology companies; ● realise potential decommissioning cost reductions through cross-industry collaboration, optimised planning and the implementation of best practice; ● supporting a world-class decommissioning industry that services needs locally and internationally; ● encouraging safe, efficient and environmentally sensitive decommissioning outcomes. Decommissioning is becoming an increasingly important topic in Australia as it has been identified that more than US$40.5 billion of necessary decommissioning work will need to be done on Australia’s offshore oil and gas infrastructure, over half of which needs to be started this decade. CODA is leading collaborative and collective action critical for developing Australia’s capability and capacity to deliver technology and services and to locally execute as much of the scope using local skills and solutions.

Decommissioning is the final stage in the offshore oil and gas production lifecycle. It involves the safe and environmentally responsible removal of offshore oil and gas facilities and their associated infrastructure. To help build a domestic decommissioning industry in Australia, we have created a roadmap that focuses on 5 key areas of opportunity: -Ensuring a regulatory framework that protects the environment and attracts investment   -Partnering with First Nations people and local communities -Optimising infrastructure opportunities and availability -Supporting new jobs and investment in recycling and waste management  -Building a skilled, safe and diverse offshore decommissioning workforce.

Really interesting study from CODA - Centre of Decommissioning Australia on the current and future skills required for the Australian oil and gas decommissioning industry. With an estimated USD $40.5 billion worth of decommissioning to be undertaken in Australia in the next 50 years, the skills required of the Australian workforce are extensive and quite specialized. The report has highlighted the large gap in capability and capacity of stakeholder engagement and consultation skills in the existing Australian workforce. From detailed consultation for regulatory approvals through to marketing and development of the industry generally, the opportunities for stakeholder engagaement and communications professionals has never been higher. Reading through this report has served as a timely reminder of how lucky I am to be the lead Strategic Communications Advisor on the Northern Endeavour decommissioning. As the first deep sea decommissioning project to occur in Australia, the importance of accurately and effectively recording and sharing the program of works is not lost on me. However CODA’s report has reconfirmed my responsibility, and the importance of sharing the lessons we are learning along the way, while being respectful to what was a very successful and quite beloved vessel. A responsibility I do not take lightly. Having always had a passion for the energy sector and anything remotely geology related, combined with being inspired by some incredibly passionate and knowledgeable people through my current role, perhaps the future for me is very much embedded in the oil and gas decommissioning industry! In the mean time, this report is well worth a read.

OSM People - Proudly Supporting CODA’s Work on the Australian Skills Review   As proud members of the Centre of Decommissioning Australia (CODA), OSM People are dedicated to addressing the critical workforce needs in the decommissioning sector. The recently released Australian Skills Review has revealed a significant gap in the current Australian workforce’s capability and capacity, particularly in stakeholder engagement and consultation skills. With an estimated USD $40.5 billion in decommissioning projects set to take place across Australia over the next 50 years, the demand for specialized and extensive skills has never been greater.
