#SCP is proud to participate in Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month through the month of May. Here are 3 suggestions to celebrate the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. 1. Instead of just eating at an Asian restaurant, talk to the owners. Learn their stories, how they went about establishing their business, the obstacles they've faced, and local issues they care about. 2. Expand your knowledge. Flip through a popular magazine and look at how they portray Asian Pacific Americans. Are the portrayals negative? Positive? What kinds of stereotypes are depicted? What kind of message do you think this sends to other readers? 3. Spread the word! Tell a non-Asian Pacific American that May is recognized as Asian Pacific American month! This is perhaps the simplest, yet most effective way to raise awareness. Tell him or her what it means to you, invite them to a local event, or share a historical fact with them. #aapihistorymonth #aapiheritagemonth #AAPI #DEIA #strategicconsultingpartners

May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Did you know May holds particular significance, marking the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in 1843 and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, largely built by Chinese laborers? This month's celebrations trace back to the dedication of a week in May 1979 to commemorate Asian Pacific American Heritage, later expanding to officially recognize the diversity of AANHPI cultures by Congress in 1992. In his 2021 Presidential Proclamation, President Biden highlighted the remarkable history and achievements of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. Despite challenges, these communities have shown resilience, courage, and leadership, enriching America's culture and society with their diverse contributions. AANHPIs have played integral roles in shaping the United States' history and identity. Thompson Coburn celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! We are pleased to showcase the achievements and contributions of the members within our Asian and South Asian affinity group. Today's Q&A features Jayna Rust, a Washington D.C. partner in the government contracts group. Q: What does being part of the AAPI community mean to you? A: I grew up in rural America and am a cross-racial adoptee; that meant that for much of my life I was around very few other Asian-Americans. It wasn’t until college that I encountered larger numbers of Asian-Americans, and I honestly did not feel like I was part of the same “community” as them given the differences in our experiences. Over time, though, I began to spend more time with other Asian-Americans and began to feel accepted as part of the community by many (but not necessarily all). There are still times that I question whether I am actually part of the Asian-American community, but I have come to accept that the Asian-American community is not a monolith, and we all bring our individual experiences to it. It certainly helps to have other Asian-American adoptees to talk with, too. Q: Are there AAPI figures who have inspired you in your journey? A: Growing up in the 80s, there were not a lot of Asian-Americans in pop culture. So, when I did see one, it was always something to celebrate. I remember watching "The Goonies" a LOT when I was a kid, and I loved Ke Huy Quan as Data. His comeback in "Everything Everywhere All At Once" decades later has been even better to see. I followed a lot of the interviews with him, and it is clear he has always had a love of acting and is truly enjoying doing it again. Seeing people do work that they enjoy is always inspiring.
