In my most recent blog, I have a deeply moving and powerful story to share. The interview below was recorded just days before Angela's baby arrived, when she was eagerly anticipating another positive GentleBirth experience, just like her previous births. She was so excited to meet her little one, and we chatted about how the GentleBirth app had been such a positive force in her previous pregnancies and births. However, Angela’s birth journey took an unexpected and terrifying turn but please note, it may be triggering for some. Despite the challenges, Angela found incredible strength through the GentleBirth app, which helped her stay calm during the crisis and supported her emotional recovery afterward. The delightful experience of birthing a woman into motherhood has been witnessed since the beginning of life. The ancient birthing postures were significantly conducive to normal deliveries in mothers, whereas this era of ours is experiencing a surge in Caesarean deliveries where the mother is put up on delivery tables these days, which is less favorable to normal deliveries. DT 100 by Phoenix fills the gap as a modern birthing table with ancient birthing techniques. 'Child' from India Rakusen and BBC Four is a journey. What has shaped you, and how? This podcast aims to illustrate that by exploring fertilisation, pregnancy, birth, and life up to one year of age. Some of my key takeaways/points of learning were: 🔸 Who a baby is, and how they become who they might be, depends on the relationships they are in. A huge amount of who they become starts even before they are conceived. 🔸 Air pollution can be as bad as smoking in increasing the risk of miscarriage. Yet, environmental issues around birth aren't focused on enough. Pregnant people are made the locus of responsibility, and therefore, other institutions, people, policy makers, etc., are somehow let off the hook. 🔸 Before we had pregnancy tests, women used to wee on wheat or barley to see if it germinated. Later in history, female urine was injected into toads and put into a jar of water overnight. If HTC, the pregnancy hormone, was present, the toad would lay eggs 🐸 . Home pregnancy tests were introduced in the 1970s. 🔸 The virgin Mary's "clean and pure" pregnancy was a patriarchal fantasy. There was a real opportunity to celebrate the physiology, the biology, the body of a woman and her agency.
