In the early days of SixTwentySix, I used to think I was pretty dialed in on the hiring front. I thought the recipe was: 👉 Interview your candidates. 👉 Pick the best of the bunch. 👉 Cross check resumes. Pretty simple, right? But I was making one big mistake. I’d get to the very end with only 1-2 candidates left standing, and I’d feel mounting pressure as the guy who had to decide. 9 times out of 10, I’d end up forcing an offer even if things felt off… Like when that rockstar candidate wanted a salary we couldn’t quite afford... Or demanded more remote flexibility than our young culture could support. I had to choose between loosening our company values just to seal the deal or risk starting from square one. Here’s what I wish I knew: 👉 Be more patient with your hiring decisions. 👉 Talk to more prospects than feels necessary. 👉 Ask smarter questions to see how they’ll perform in their role. Ensuring a prospective hire really fits will save more time than training the wrong person. Now I understand the phrase: “Fire fast. Hire slow.” You’ll assemble stronger teams. Guaranteed.
