These are entry level roles, and the profile is typically someone fresh out of college or grad school with a degree in international affairs, #internationaldevelopment, area studies, languages, or related fields. This means that #veterans with global work experience can have an edge, especially with the right #elevatorpitch. Let’s say you are a loadmaster who handled the delivery of equipment to a earthquake-struck airport where you can only land on a taxiway (or for that matter, the Afghanistan evacuation). Set the scene: There is a crisis, and you have the training and resources to respond. Define your role: “You might think it’s just about max weight, but we needed to also consider where in the plane that weight sits, how much space it takes up, how far that weight needs to travel (because gas mileage), and, since we’re in a crisis, what else we can fit in the available space without getting us off-balance, that will be immediately useful when unloaded and not block access points or use up warehouse space at the destination.” Relate your actions to the skills needed in this position and the language used in the programs associated with it: “I have plenty of resources to help me out: literal reams of aircraft documentation, spreadsheets to calculate max weight and weight distributions at given altitudes, temperatures, and runway length, vast amounts of practice, and team of people to sanity check the instincts I’ve honed through study, on-the-job training, scenario-planning, mission prep and briefing, and lots of debriefing and lessons learned. Still, that day, when we were ready to go and we learned the taxiway landing zone was getting shorter because there wasn’t a way to quickly distribute the supplies coming in, I was making the recommendations of what to leave behind.” And then connect it to the WHY of applying here: “It struck me a few missions later, when the runways were open again, just how much had been accomplished with coordination and getting the skills and materials in place, on time, in full. That’s the kind of experience that really made me realize that I had the skills to really help people improve their resilience to supply chain shocks, and that I wanted to be a part of it.
