Founder/Director Not Our Native Daughters- Missing, Murdered & Indigenous Women & Girls - Human Trafficking in Indian Country. Subject - Matter - Expert in Indigenous Issues - Public Speaker - Trainer - Advocate!
Last week, I attended two conferences and met with leaders from national native-led nonprofits. This week, I’ve been inundated with conversations around nonprofit leadership, and it’s clear that Native-led nonprofits are among the least funded. We discussed how election years divert donations, how we can celebrate and uplift one another, and the challenge of staying true to our culture without commodifying our work or Indigenous identities. Working within Native-led nonprofits, businesses, or any initiatives is incredibly hard, as we’re often under more scrutiny than non-Native entities. Our grassroots efforts shouldn’t be judged by not having the highest charity ratings—those take 3-5 years to achieve. Native nonprofits receive less than 1% of public funding in most states, yet we remain dedicated to healing and restoring our own people despite this lack of support. There are those who divide and complain, but many of us understand that when one Native organization thrives and is recognized, it lifts us all. That’s why we’ll always be rooting for our people! Here at DickersonBakker, we are on a mission. We are sounding the alarm. We are speaking up for change. We are confident there is #abetterway forward for nonprofits. Last summer, our team surveyed almost 400 nonprofit leaders and fundraising staff and discovered the main areas where there is a loud cry for change: The overwhelming majority of fundraisers desire new strategies for success. A perception divide exists between CEO’s and frontline fundraising staff. The nonprofit sector is grappling with a serious crisis of misalignment. Relationship Changes Everything--both within an organization and in relation to its donors. However, despite this demand, many donor-supported organizations have yet to see this change materialize. This year, the 2024 Nonprofit Leader Study aims to understand the reasons behind this lack of change. Will you help us by giving ten minutes of your time to share your perspective? Your input will have a lasting impact. https://bit.ly/2024NPLS #nonprofitleaders #research #fundraising #dickersonbakker
