Therapists seeking therapy? Some reflective take on it. Usually, therapists are seen as oddly perfect beings particularly when it comes to their emotional regulation. Well here’s the truth. No, therapists don’t have it all figured as well. As humans we’ve all got a certain way through our highs and lows. When I initially started the supervision, I remember my supervisor asking me if I have personally been a part of therapeutic process? Have I been in client’s chair? It definitely sparked some reflections at that time too. 🛋️ As a mental health professional, seeking therapy for oneself adds to the empathic understanding for our clients. 🛋️ Yes, therapists may have more insights but sometimes you may need a professional to help you further with it. 🛋️ As somebody who works on humanistic line, self actualisation can be seen as being aware about one’s identity and peculiarities. Rather than having it all figured out. 🛋️ A therapist seeking therapy, professionally would also learn along the lines of practice and would individually serve better. 🛋️ It helps deal with burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. As a psychologist, I feel grateful to be part of a community that holds empathetic space and mental health resources readily available for everyone around. What are your thoughts on it? Would love to hear from you.🤍 #therapisttotherapist #mentalhealthcircle #mentalhealthcommunity #mentalhealthawareness #breakingstigma #nomorestigma #emotionalregulation #learningaboutoneself #selfawareness #selfactualisation

Therapist self care is a very poorly understood philosophy and practice. It is very common for professionals to experience burnout and wear that as a badge of honor in our society. It is even more common in the helping professions like therapy and other medical professions for individuals to push themselves to the brink of exhaustion. Burnout in the mental health space is real and it happens due to all the tasks that most professionals are exposed to but also because of the emotional drain. Sitting with client's feelings, helping them explore their difficult emotions and helping them with everything that can bring in a therapy room is often rewarding but can sometimes lead to exhaustion. I try to include self care in my day to day activities in order to avoid exhaustion and burnout. I inculcate self care in forms of scheduling breaks between sessions, being careful of my caseload by taking on fewer complicated clients and also to take care of myself once I am back at home as well. Self care at home often includes me spending time in nature, listening to music, spending time with my family and my pets, disconnecting from my phone and spending my weekends outdoors. I would love to hear many more perspectives on self care for Professionals working in the mental health space. A phenomena that is increasing by the day is therapists ghosting their clients. Some of the common reasons (if at all there is a chance to talk about things) are not having enough slots, taking longer hours or days to respond or get back to the client or simply not reverting. "I've switched a few therapists here and there in the 3 to 4 years of trying out therapy. And I too have felt disconnected with my therapists due to long breaks between sessions or being unable to catch them when their practice picks up due to demand (almost makes me want to keep my therapist a secret at times due to this). Experiencing your therapist ghosting you can be incredibly distressing and disorienting specially when it's the last space you expect such feelings to arise due to the nature of the work. I've realised that it's essential to acknowledge the emotions that arise, such as confusion, abandonment, and frustration. Reaching out to friends or family for support helped during this challenging time, while also looking for a new therapist who provided the guidance and care that I was looking out for. Remember that your mental health is important, and seeking help is a courageous step towards healing." ~ Radhika Dhawan, Founder & Counseling Psychologist. . . . . . #aaveg #aavegwellbeingandtherapy #therapistsconnect #therapistspeaks #therapistghosting #yourtherapistghostsyou #ghosting #frustration #abandonment #expect #newyork #timessquarenyc

Does Seeing More Clients Define You as a Good Therapist? In the mental health field, there’s often an assumption that the number of clients you see or the amount of sessions you conduct is a measure of success. But does seeing many clients truly define you as a good therapist? In my opinion, the quality of care we provide far outweighs the quantity of sessions or clients served. In some settings, there is a strong focus on achieving high KPIs or meeting client quotas to define a therapist’s effectiveness. While metrics can offer valuable insights into workflow and productivity, I believe the true essence of mental health care cannot be captured by numbers alone. Mental health is not a one-size-fits-all service. In my clinical experience, there are times when just one or two sessions are enough to make a real difference, and other times when a longer, more consistent engagement is necessary for deeper healing and exploration. Each individual requires tailored, compassionate care that allows them to thrive on their own terms. Focusing solely on reaching KPIs or hitting high numbers risks turning therapy into a transactional service rather than a meaningful, healing journey. I believe true therapeutic progress comes from building trust, being present, and offering meaningful support—qualities that simply can’t be quantified. Ultimately, the value of therapy lies in the depth of connection and the positive impact it has on each individual’s well-being. As therapists, our goal should be to foster genuine change and growth, not just to meet targets. While metrics have their place, they should never overshadow the heart of what we do—providing empathetic, person-centered care. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about how many clients we see, but how many lives we truly help transform. #MentalHealth #Therapy #ClientCenteredCare #CompassionateCare #TherapeuticAlliance #MentalHealthProfessionals #QualityCare

🌟 Well-being Therapy pills! 🌟 Well-Being Therapy is a brief therapy, centering on self-observation aided by a structured diary, fostering patient-therapist interaction, and engaging in tailored homework assignments. The core of this approach lies in empowering patients to pinpoint cases of well-being in their daily lives, contextualizing them within their circumstances. Through cognitive restructuring, individuals uncover and challenge automatic thoughts hindering their well-being. What sets Well-Being Therapy apart is its focus on leveraging well-being as a trigger for self-observation, contrasting with distress-centric approaches. By identifying activities that promote well-being and encouraging optimal experiences, this therapy paves the way for flourishing and resilience. This pioneering approach developed by Giovanni Andrea Fava underscores the transformative potential of positive psychology in mental health interventions. #WellBeingTherapy #PositivePsychology #MentalHealth 🌱

Absolutely, therapy is not a taboo, and it's important to promote open conversations about mental health. Seeking therapy is a courageous and positive step towards self-care and emotional well-being. Just like physical health, mental health is a crucial aspect of overall wellness. Therapists are trained professionals who can provide support, guidance, and tools to help individuals navigate life's challenges. Shaping Therapies strongly advocates seeking therapy for any individual and for any age group as soon as they themselves or their doctor believes that they need intervention. Changing the narrative around therapy and mental health is essential for reducing stigma. It encourages people to reach out for help when needed, fostering a culture of understanding and empathy. Everyone can benefit from therapy, whether they are dealing with specific issues, seeking personal growth, or simply needing a safe space to explore their thoughts and feelings. It's encouraging to see a shift in societal attitudes towards mental health, with more awareness campaigns, advocacy, and open discussions. The more we talk about mental health openly, the more we can break down barriers and create a supportive environment for individuals to prioritize their mental well-being without fear of judgment. Therapy intervention is not just Psychological but Occupational, Speech or Remedial Intervention is also an important part of it. #mentalhealth #occupationaltherapy #speechlanguagepathology #shapingtherapies #interventions

Seeking therapy is a brave and empowering step toward better mental health. However, with so many options available, it can be difficult to know where to start and what to look for in a therapist. Whether you're starting therapy for the first time or looking to switch therapists, here are some key factors to consider: 🧠 Approach and Methodology: Every therapist has a unique approach, such as talk therapy, behavior therapy, and special techniques like eye movement therapy. Do some research beforehand to narrow down which method feels right for you. Don't be shy—ask your potential therapist how they work and if it matches what you're looking for. 🌎 Cultural Competence: Finding a therapist who understands and respects your cultural background and identity can make a big difference, as it helps create a stronger, more supportive connection. When searching for a therapist, look for someone who openly discusses and respects your unique cultural experiences and incorporates this understanding into your treatment plan. 🤝 Comfort and Trust: Any therapeutic relationship is built on trust. During your initial meetings, pay attention to how comfortable you feel with a provider. Can you talk freely and honestly without feeling judged? Do you feel understood and supported? It's crucial to find someone you can open up to, as this trust will be the foundation of your healing journey. Choosing the right therapist is a personal journey, and taking the time to find the right match can make all the difference in your journey. These are just a few things to look for, and remember, it's okay to try a few before finding the one that feels right for you. #MentalHealth #Therapy #MentalHealthMatters #SelfCare

Therapists, your client is hesitant about disclosing their mental health diagnosis, repeat after me… Explore with your client why they might feel ready to consider disclosing now compared to before. Could difficulties in functioning without accommodations be a factor? How might this struggle impact their identity, self-esteem, confidence, and sense of belonging? Consider the culture in their workplace, school, or environment they are considering disclosing. Are there existing policies or protections they can rely on, or will they need to educate others? Do they feel accepted, supported, and safe, or fear judgment, misunderstanding, or retaliation in their current environment? Have you discussed potential reasonable accommodations with the client? I recommend starting with the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) for guidance. It's crucial to stay within your scope of competency when discussing accommodations. Have you advocated for accommodations and written letters, and are you familiar with the process? Exploring how clients find support for their mental health needs can illuminate their strengths and adaptability. Understanding their previous adaptations and how those experiences impacted them is crucial. Acknowledging the challenges of navigating neurotypical environments, code-switching, acculturation stress, masking, and conforming to rigid professional norms is also essential in this process. But you knew that! 😉 #mentalhealth #mentalhealtheducation #clinicalsupervision #careercoach #careercounseling
