As Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) 2024 takes off, YCC Family Crisis Center is deeply aligned with this year's theme: "Heal, Hold & Center." Domestic violence does not discriminate—it crosses all boundaries of race, age, gender, and socioeconomic status. This reality underscores the importance of a comprehensive approach that heals the deep wounds of violence, holds space for survivors to reclaim their power, and centers the voices and experiences of those most marginalized. At YCC, we witness daily the strength and resilience of survivors, especially those who navigate the intersecting challenges of anti-Blackness and other forms of systemic oppression. We are committed to embracing the many cultural ways that healing can take place, whether through community support, creative expression, or the re-establishment of safe and nurturing environments. Our mission to end domestic violence is inherently tied to the pursuit of social justice. We firmly believe that there is no true justice for survivors without addressing the racial and social inequalities that perpetuate violence and oppression. As a Deputy Champion for the prevention of Domestic and Family Violence at Queensland Corrective Services I have joined the Polished Man campaign to end violence against women and children. In Australia, 1 in 7 children have experience child abuse and every 4 days 1 woman is killed. This violence disproportionately affects women, with intimate partner homicides involving a female victim and a male perpetrator being the most common type of femicide. While most men do not use violence against women and children and believe it to be unacceptable, many stand by and do little to prevent it, allowing it to continue. This is why Polished Man encourages men to step up, speak out and take a stand. As carers, leaders and protectors, men have a positive and vital role to play in helping to stop violence against women and children. We want men to say enough is enough and take action to create a safer world for all women and children. We are called Polished ‘Man’, but we want to empower everyone to become part of the solution. We need as many hands (and nails) as we can get to tackle these global issues to make sure no woman or child has to live with violence. https://lnkd.in/gKazHsuh

Just a quick update on action being taken to convene Funders around a longer term response to the Race Riots; 🔴 Today, I am convening a smaller group of funders to explore whether there is potential for collaboration around the issues raised by the riots - particularly looking at emotional and wellbeing support, systemic racial injustice issues and tackling misinformation and hate narratives. 🔴 On Sep 5th, we have a deeper insight session for funders on Structural Racism, how it manifests, disparities in outcomes, the impact of discrimination and what are the long term solutions, funders need to be working on. 🔴 On Sep 25th, a further insight session for funders on Islamophobia, what it means, the context of Muslim communities, the impact of the recent riots, the challenges facing Muslim faith based charities and how we can effectively support these communities, I am really hoping that we can continue to keep the momentum going, so that the statements made by funders are not just performative, but lead to action. I will be on leave from this evening, for rest and restoration but my brilliant colleagues BBC Children in Need, will continue to hold this space whilst I am away.

Ahead of the General Election on the 4th of July, it is crucial that the needs of babies, children and young people are prioritised. They deserve safer, happier and healthier childhoods and more equal access to opportunities.    All political leaders must now use their manifestos to set out plans to tackle child poverty, provide more support for young people’s mental health and wellbeing, and invest in children’s social care.    We have a crucial opportunity to put children's concerns and experiences at the centre of decision making – to bring children to the table. We look forward to working with political parties as they harness this opportunity.    We also call on party leaders to take the ground-breaking step of participating in a televised debate focussed on children and young people. What better way to show that they value children and young people than to include them in these key conversations?   Let's have Children at the Table in transforming their lives. The LiveFree OKC Peace Needs Conference was truly a powerful experience. The conference brought together a diverse group of voices from law enforcement, engaged citizens, and activists to faith leaders and elected officials. Together, we focused on policies of peace and community-driven solutions to one of the most pressing issues in our society: gun violence. Some of the sessions tackled critical topics like gun violence in America, community violence intervention, school-based violence prevention, and how faith communities can become true houses of peace. What struck me the most was the commitment to finding common ground – putting politics aside to build consensus for a safer future. As the board president of LiveFree OKC, I’ve witnessed firsthand the dedication and heart of our team. Their tireless work in serving Ward 7, is making a real difference – more of our children are making it home safely every day. Cumbria Children & Young People's Voluntary Sector Reference Group. I attended my first VSRG meeting this week on behalf of Angels...to be honest, I think I'm still recovering. Firstly, it was great to meet third sector colleagues, to hear about the incredible work that they're doing with children and young people throughout Cumbria. Yet, it was incredibly sad to hear that we are still not reaching enough young people, especially those with mental ill-health. I know from my work in local schools that it is a very real thing. For many of our young people, just getting into school is a massive challenge and they don't all make it. Is this a new epidemic born of the 21st century and if so is there a cure? I don't have the answers. I listen to the debates, some of them resonate, especially around social media - when did we all become keyboard warriors? I like to think that in the not too distant future, Angels will be able to work with some of these young people; listening, sharing their stories, building resilience and telling their truths. In the meantime, my prayers are for them, Angels and my colleagues as we all continue just trying to put one foot in front of the other.

In the words of the great Whitney Houston “I believe the children are our future” 🙋🏻 But in 2024 what is the future for our children? Faced with -poverty -a housing crisis -an NHS crisis -an exam factory education system -fewer health visitors for babies -increasing mental health issues -online bullying -negative influence via social media -youth violence and knife crime - child exploitation -worrying global events -the effects of climate change As the NSPCC says “The UK has a chance to be best the place in the world to grow up.
